An apparatus and method for supplying cab signal to a rail vehicle on a section of track composed of sequentially adjacent railway track circuit blocks. Respective receivers of each track circuit block are monitored for the presence of a vehicle within that block. The cab signal apparatus is controlled to transmit a signal to a block when the output from the respective receiver in that block indicates a different condition from the adjacent receiver of an adjacent block. Output voltages from adjacent receivers are compared to enable transmission of a cab signal. Comparison of adjacent receiver outputs is accomplished through use of a diode bridge.

Each master and satellite unit having transmitting and receiving capabilities. The output impedance of the transmitters or of the receivers is of a low impedance as connected to the rails. Through an alternative transmit and receive sequence a link-up between the master and satellite units provides detection of broken rail and/or shunts from each end of the track circuit. The use of low impedance and detection at both ends of the section permit extended length track circuits.

A railway signalling system using coded digital signals impressed on the tracks for direct or computer directed block signal control, the presence of a train on a track section causing shunting of the signals and an indication from a receiver which operates in a fail-safe configuration. in each signal circuit first and second tone oscillators provide carrier signals which are modulated in a specific digital pattern and applied to the tracks. A tone sensitive receiver separately detects the carrier signals and provides pulse train outputs which are decoded in a binary counter and coincidence gate circuit for ascertainment that the correct digital code pattern has been received. Signals are developed for energization of an oscillator, the output of the latter being amplified for direct or computer directed block signal control. More than one signal circuit can be employed on common tracks for separate or overlapping signal control by the selection of different pairs of operating frequencies, readily accommodated by plug-in filter substitution.

At each end of a track stretch, a relay chain driven by a code transmitter at times connects across the rails in repeated sequences a polar, code following track relay, a track battery, and a rail shunt path. A similar sequence of rail connections at each intermediate repeater location is produced by a front contact repeater and a decoding repeater of the corresponding track relay. Each repeater relay has a selected slow release to produce the sequence following each response by the track relay to a received energy pulse. The pulse following operation of each end location track relay is decoded by a repeater relay which connects the track relay continuously across the rails and inhibits relay chain operation. A shorter relay chain at one end prevents scrambled code and provides a dominant pulse transmitter with no train occupancy and no entering signal cleared. Each repeater location transmits in either direction and requires no insulated joints to separate adjoining sections since track battery connections are of alternately opposite polarity from location to location. The track rail shunt applied following pulse transmission at each location prevents response by the associated track relay to the subsequent pulse transmitted from the adjacent advance location and thus maintains pulse direction. To prevent false operation, each track relay is rail connected with polarity opposite to the same location track battery. Clearing an entering signal sets up pulse transmission from the other end.
