There are described a process and apparatus for measuring the degree of filament intermingling of an intermingled multifilament yarn. The intermingled yarn is moved through a self-conveying fluid jet (air jet). The yarn substantially fills out the jet channel and emerges from the jet in a virtually tensionless state. Owing to the pressure difference at the jet outlet, noncohesive yarn zones expand explosively in the manner of a balloon. After expansion, the yarn passes before a sensor means, preferably an electronic camera, which detects the lightness differences or light diffraction phenomena due to the yarn filaments and sends as a function thereof a signal to a signal processing means. The method of measurement of the invention makes it possible to obtain very accurate information about the nature of the intermingling (spot type or continuous) and also about the geometry of intermingling (for example number and spacing of intermingling nodes in the case of spot type intermingling).

A method and an apparatus produces intertwining knots in a multifilament thread. In this case, an air-stream pulse is directed through a nozzle opening transversely onto the thread. In order to produce a continuous succession of intertwining knots, the air-stream pulse is produced periodically with an interval between the air-stream pulses. In order to be able to produce an irregular thread structure, the interval between successive air-stream pulses is continuously changed. To this end, the apparatus has a nozzle ring carrying the nozzle opening, the nozzle ring being coupled to a drive. The drive of the nozzle ring is assigned a control device, by way of which a rotary speed of the nozzle ring is controllable for the purpose of changing an interval between the air-stream pulses.

A first sensor, such as an optical sensor, is positioned proximate a first location of a yarn travel path to output a first signal representative of the position of a yarn at the first location. A second sensor, such as another optical sensor, is positioned proximate a second location of the yarn travel path to output a second signal representative of the yarn at the second location. A controller controls a temperature of a fluid employed to heat the yarn. The controller receives the first signal and the second signal, which are analyzed to produce a heat control signal that is used to control the temperature of the fluid. The heated fluid is used to texturize the yarn, such that the yarn is tensioned and maintained so that a yarn take-up point is substantially stationary.

Threads made from thermoplastic materials are textured, in that they are heated by a delivery medium in a delivery channel and conveyed through an orifice into a stuffer box where they are stuffed to form a plug. In order to maintain plug formation constant, the orifice area is monitored in a sensory manner and the measured signals are used for monitoring purposes as a measured quantity in a control loop, in which the supply of damming back medium, the conveying away speed of the plug, the position of the stuffer box walls, or the supply of delivery medium are used as manipulated variables. The measuring signals produced by monitoring can be compared with thresholds to produce control signals corresponding to the comparison result for activating alarm, warning or stopping elements. Sensory monitoring is carried out by measuring the dynamic pressure prevailing in the delivery channel close to the orifice, by measuring the dynamic pressure in a fluidic nozzle issuing into the stuffer box, or by monitoring with an optical sensor the interior of the stuffer box.

The process and apparatus are characterized by a unique control system which facilitates accumulatorless operation and which allows two or more yarns to be texturized at the same time and wound on the same winder spindle. The control system is adapted to sense relative high and low yarn tension and to control tension to control wound yarn length to ensure that equal lengths of each yarn are collected (wound) on the winder spindle without over tensioning the yarn and without intermediate yarn accumulation.
