    摘要: A gloss control system especially for use on a super calender roll system uses controllable jets of heated air arranged along the segment of a calender roll not in contact with a paper web to both control the overall gloss level and equalize the expansion and contraction of the roll which would otherwise be affected by the heat sink effect of the paper on the contacted portion of the roll causing an hour-glass effect. The air jet units utilize electrical heating elements and are actually arranged along, for example, 11/2 inch zones of the paper to provide for a differential profile control with relatively cold air on the uncovered ends of the calender roll to compensate for contraction of the center portion of the roll.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for processing a longitudinally traveling web of material using a sheet treating device positioned in a transverse direction relative to the web. The sheet treating device having a plurality of individually controllable zones for controlling a target parameter of the web, for example, the thickness, bulk, dampness, smoothness or sheen of the web. In conjunction with the sheetmaking device, a measuring instrument for measuring an actual value of the target parameter is placed downstream of the sheet treating device. An actual profile that is determined by the actual values is compared with a desired profile, and the zones of the sheet treating device are adjusted such that the discrepancies between the two profiles are minimized. To improve the matching of the actual profile to the desired profile even further, the web and/or the sheet treating device are shifted relative to the other in the transverse direction to minimize the discrepancies between the two profiles.

    摘要: Apparatus for cooling the end portions of a calender roll which has an elastic layer adjacent its peripheral surface and wherein the central portion of the peripheral surface is overlapped by a running web of paper or other material when the calender is in use. The width of the non-overlapped portions of the peripheral surface of the roll varies when a web having a first width is followed by a web having a different second width. This could lead to damage to the roll at the non-overlapped portions of the peripheral surface as a result of overheating by an adjacent rotary component of the calender. The end portions of the roll are cooled by discrete adjustable cooling devices which are movable along the respective non-overlapped portions of the peripheral surface in parallelism with the axis of the roll and each of which shares movements with a monitoring device which is to be maintained in a selected position relative to the adjacent marginal portion of a running web. To this end, the monitoring devices transmit signals to discrete reversible motors which move the monitoring devices along the respective non-overlapped portions of the peripheral surface and are brought to a halt when the monitoring devices assume their selected positions.

    摘要: In a calendering apparatus for hot-calendering a paper web, the apparatus includes a rotatable calendering roll defining a smooth calendering surface. A backing roll rotatably cooperates with the calendering roll for defining therebetween a calendering nip for the passage therethrough of the web. An induction heater is disposed in close proximity to the calendering surface nip for inducing eddy currents within the calendering roll such that the calendering roll is heated. A blow box is disposed in close proximity to the calendering surface and between the heater and the nip. The blow box defines a plurality of compartments which are disposed in a cross-machine direction. Each of the compartments selectively blows a current of cooling air against the calendering surface for controlling the temperature of the calendering surface so that the temperature of the calendering surface adjacent to the nip is controlled in a cross-machine direction.

    摘要: A roll arrangement for calendars or super-calendars is provided by the combination of two rolls which together form a press nip wherein one of the rolls is solely deflection-controllable and the other roll is solely temperature-controllable zone by zone. The temperature-controllable roll has a tubular rotatable roll shell and a stationary core extending through the roll shell. The space between the roll shell and the core is divided by means of several peripheral seals into numerous annular chambers. A flow of fluid is guided through each of the annular chambers. The fluid temperature in each annular chamber is independently controllable. Consequently the temperature-controlled roll shell can be heated by the fluid to different degrees along the axis thereof to control its external diameter along each zone. The peripheral seals are sized to have free play in a direction transverse to the roll axis and are constructed as endless, metallic rings. The external diameter of the rings is a trifle smaller than the internal diameter of the roll shell.

    摘要: The invention relates to a calender bowl which can be heated by means of a heating medium that is in a liquid or gaseous state of matter. The calender bowl comprises a roll body (1) that is provided with peripheral bores (4) and flange journals (2, 3) comprising supply and discharge conduits for the heating medium. Thermal insulating bushes (8) are mounted on the end areas of the peripheral bores. The heating medium flows through the peripheral bores. The aim of the invention is to adapt the heat transfer from said bores to the lateral surface of the roll body to the respective heat requirements in such a way that the harmful measured differences stay within limits so that the product is not impaired. To this end, adjusting devices are allocated to the flange journals for controllably turning and/or axially displacing the insulating bushes.

    摘要: The invention relates to a method for roll cooling in paper machines with soft smoothing mechanisms. The object of the invention is to protect the soft roll from damage without having to increase the extent of edge trimming of the paper web. This is achieved in that the parts of the soft roll which respectively project beyond the width of the paper web are cooled by the application of a thin and sharply bounded water film. The corresponding devices for generating the water films are mounted in carriages which are displaceable along a transverse beam parallel to the roll.
