    摘要: A protective device is described having a membrane and a support device for the membrane, wherein the support device has an inflatable first support element with a flexible wall which forms a first pressure chamber. The first support element has a first connection port with a first connection opening. The support device has an inflatable second support element with a flexible wall which forms a second pressure chamber. The second support element has a second connection port with a second connection opening. A connection device for connecting the first connection port to the second connection port is provided, wherein the connection device has a first connection part for connecting to the first connection port and a second connection part for connecting to the second connection port. The protective device is characterised in that means are provided for connecting the first and second connection parts to one another in a detachable manner.

    摘要: An inflatable and rigidizable structure for use as a habitat or a load bearing structure is disclosed. The structure consists of an outer wall and an inner wall defining a containment member and a bladder. The bladder is pressurized to erect the structure from an initially collapsed state. The containment member is subsequently injected with rigidizable fluid through an arrangement of injection ports. Exhaust gases from the curing rigidizable fluid are vented through an arrangement of exhaust ports. The rate of erection can be controlled by frictional engagement with a container or by using a tether. A method for fabricating a tubular structure is disclosed.

    摘要: A construction system of a plurality of interlocking construction elements is disclosed. At least one of the interlocking elements is a cured-in-place element having a pliable exterior shell defining a cavity and a strength-imparting core placed inside the cavity. The system also includes a hardenable media for filling the cavity. The exterior shell of the cured-in-place element is adapted to expand as its cavity is filled with the hardenable media or as the hardenable media cures, whereby the interlocking construction elements bond into an integral structure by a an interference or a friction fit. Methods of construction of new structures and reinforcement of preexisting ones are also disclosed.

    摘要: The instant invention employs the impressive capabilities of modern materials such as plastics, composites, and metal alloys of carrying large tension forces, enabling them to carry compression loads by converting the compressive force of internally contained pressurized fluids into distributed tension forces. The walls and membranes of the pressurized elements, and of the envelopes are not “inflated” as in structures made of flaccid or stretchable materials, but are made of substantially rigid materials whose rigidity is enhanced by the fluid pressures contained within. An important application of the principals set forth herein will be in the use of very high tensile strength materials such as titanium or aluminum that are not often considered for use in compression. The significant weight-savings so achieved make possible new applications that might include exotic airframes: lighter-than-air craft, or small robotic solar-powered aircraft to be used for survey, surveillance, or communication.
