In a tunnel driving apparatus which employs hydraulic rams for advancing a shield in the direction of tunnel advancement, a thrust ring is used as a support for the rams. Lining sections are installed at the rear side of the thrust ring as the latter is shifted up. These lining sections are each spaced from the exposed tunnel wall when installed to receive fluid concrete used to form a tunnel lining. The thrust ring defines chambers, one of which has filter means which faces the concrete reception space and contacts the concrete therein. Water is withdrawn from the concrete by suction created by reducing the pressure in the chambers and the other of the chambers is used to collect the water. Inflatable packings are used to seal off the concrete reception space and can be deflated when the thrust ring is shifted up.

The present invention relates to a shield driving machine by which eliminates excessive work of the ground when working at a curved section while suppressing an increase of the sinking of the ground surface and securing a quickening in the stability of segments. In the shield driving machine, a bulkhead 16 is provided at the tip end side of the shield driving machine body 14 of the shield driving machine 10. The chamber 18 which is formed by the bulkhead 16 and has the tip end side open is filled up with excavated earth and sand and is used to oppose the earth pressure and water pressure in the natural ground. A rotating shaft 22 which supports cross-shaped spokes 20 penetrates on the center axis of the bulkhead 16. At the shield driving machine 10, a plurality of openings 24 which discharge a part of the excavated earth and sand supplied from the chamber 18 to the rear side of the shield driving machine body 14 are provided at the hood portion 27.

A form front positioned between the shield of a tunnel excavator and a tunnel-lining form movable relative to both the shield and the tunnel-lining form. The form front comprises an annular support positioned with clearance space from the shield and the tunnel-lining form, wherein the annular support has a lipped inner seal pressing on the tunnel-lining form and is held thereto by pressure adjacent the inner covering surface of the annular support, and also has an outer seal held under pressure against the shield adjacent the outer covering surface of the annular support. One such form front which fulfills all the desired practical requirements comprises a circular outer seal which has a symmetrical cross section with respect to a central symmetry plane parallel to the plane of the annular support and is positioned in a circular groove provided in the annular support, and at the same time along the bottom of the circular groove under the outer seal a clamp ring divided into a plurality of clamp segments is adjustable radially with the aid of an adjusting mechanism engaged to the ends of the segments so as to tighten or loosen the form front.
