    摘要: A mechanical locking differential includes a driving ring in a differential housing between right and left active components. The driving ring is in line with the input bevel gear. The differential housing has a thin wall in a single, integral shell around the driving ring. Several hollow cylindrical shaft pins are used to attached the driving ring to the differential housing, with the shaft pins being driven radially relative to the transverse axis of the differential outputs in an interference fit with the housing and the driving ring. The shaft pins are held from axially backing out by two small rivets. The shaft pins preferably have a threaded inner diameter which assists in removal. The shaft pin attachment allows the bevel gear to extend closer to the transverse axis without obstruction.

    摘要: A hold-out ring type locking differential for an automobile or other type of motorized vehicle includes a differential case housing a number of components, such as a center driver positioned between holdout rings, clutch members, springs, spring retainers, side gears, and thrust washers. The center driver includes a center cam that engages inner teeth of the clutch members, which in turn include a tooth shape or profile for reducing stress and wear while increasing an operational life of the clutch member. The inner clutch teeth each have a top portion coupled to a base portion at an intersection point. The top portion extends from the intersection point to a free edge surface while the base portion extending from the intersection point continually into a root radius region.

    摘要: A locking differential includes a housing with an interior chamber in which a two-piece split-center driver is located. The split-center driver is positioned on opposite sides of a cross-pin assembly. A pair of axially spaced output shafts extend from the interior chamber and are coupled to a pair of side gears. The split-center driver gear and a centered cam member are arranged co-axially about the adjacent ends of the output shafts, and annular clutch members are operable to disconnect an overrunning output shaft.

    摘要: A preloaded differential includes may take the form of a hold-out ring type locking differential having a preloaded thrust assembly that may be insertable in the differential as a one-piece unit. The preloaded thrust assembly includes a pair of thrust members each having complimentarily shaped protruding and recessed portions that interlock after assembly to prevent rotation of the thrust members relative to one another. Further, one or more conical, disc-shaped springs may be located between the thrust members to bias the thrust members directly against side gears positioned within the differential to reduce or prevent radial movement of the side gears. In one embodiment, the thrust members include a friction and thrust contact surface that directly contacts the side gears and the springs are located within a region formed by the interlocking features of the thrust members.

    摘要: Positive acting differentials of the type having toothed drivers and couplers which automatically connect the two axles together to provide optimum traction for the vehicle, yet releases one axle when the vehicle is proceeding around a curve without drive wheel slippage, whereby only a single axle is engaged through the drive system. In assemblies of the type wherein the axles are retained in the assembly by a C clip, at least one driver is slotted so as to provide space for the insertion of C clip during assembly. This allows selection of the driver and coupler thicknesses without being restricted by the possible positions of the C clip groove in the axles during assembly, and reduces wear in the driver and coupler teeth by eliminating asymmetry between the engaging drivers and couplers. Preferred and some alternate embodiments are disclosed.

    摘要: A differential assembly having a driving case enclosing a pair of driving members operably coupled with a pair of driven members. The driven members are secured to output shafts and the driving members are forcibly driven by a driving shaft having its opposite ends in engagement with the driving case. The mid-section of the driving shaft passes through an eccentric or angled aperture formed by cooperating arcuate surfaces provided in opposing surfaces of the driving members. The driving members and the driven members are urged together respectively by double oppositely wound concentric springs bearing against a pin carried in an elongated hole coextensively provided in opposing surfaces of adjacent driving members of both pairs. Inspection and access openings are provided in passageways and in the oblong cross-section of part of the passageways.

In order to decrease the turning radius of the vehicle, the lug portions on one holdout ring are angularly displaced relative to the lug portions on the other holdout ring, whereby the overrunning output shaft is maintained in a disengaged condition during a sharp turn that produces overrunning of the output shaft above a given value.

    摘要: A positive locking differential that functions to compensate for the difference in driving wheel travel which occurs when turning or traveling over uneven ground, while at the same time functioning to prevent wheel-slip when one wheel looses traction. The differential comprises a spider-center cam assembly having four trunnions projecting radially from a center ring on each side of which is located a plurality of fixed driving clutch teeth. The internal diameter of the spider mounts the center cam in such a manner that the same may be rotated a limited, predetermined distance. The center cam is symmetric having cam lifts on each side which include rounded surfaces that provide anti-friction ramps for disengaging driven clutch members mounted on each side of the spider and center cam assembly. The driven clutch members have clutch teeth which correspond to the clutch teeth on the spider and through which a driving torque is transmitted. Disengaging cams radially inwardly spaced from the driven clutch teeth and rigidly attached to the clutch are adapted to mesh with the cams of the center cam member. Enlarged sections and corresponding slotted portions disposed between the clutch members and the spider-cam assembly at spaced intervals maintain the clutch members in a disengaged mode during relative movement between the clutch members and the spider-cam assembly. Suitable splined members are provided to receive the vehicle axle shafts to transmit the torque from the positive locking differential to the vehicle wheels.
