    摘要: A system and method for installing a nozzle dam unit (26) in a nuclear steam generator having a head (12) including a head internal surface, a manway (14) penetrating the head, and a nozzle (16) penetrating the head. The system comprises a manipulator (76) adapted to be passed through the manway and having one end (82) adapted to be attached remotely to the head internal surface and a free end including a clamp member (104). A plurality of nozzle dam segments (54, 56, 58) are each sized to pass through the manway and carry means thereon (120) for engaging at least one other segment, the segments when fully engaged to each other forming a dam subassembly sized to pass into and seat against the nozzle. The manipulator is controlled so that the clamp member grasps and supports one of the dam segments within the head until the subassembly is formed within the head, and then is translated within the head until the dam subassembly seats within the nozzle.

    摘要: The present invention relates to a system, teaches a technique, and provides apparatus eminently useful for the installation/removal, from a remote and protected location, of nozzle dams onto and from nozzle holddown rings within the channel heads of certain steam generators, including the types typically used in conjunction with the operation of pressurized hot-water nuclear power plants. The technique or method of the instant invention involves methodology for remotely introducing usually with the aid of tackle insertion tool means, through an open channel head manway requisite tubesheet tackle means, or tackle means, as well as strapping means and the securing of same therein; inserting through said open manway, usually with the aid of lifting means, folded nozzle dam means; opening said dam means and properly orientating same relative to said nozzle holddown ring; inserting, orientating, and securing the center portion of said nozzle dam means, torquing bolting means to predetermined limits; and removing from said channel head all said attendant tubesheet tackle means. The effecting of the instant technique requires only a minimal amount of relatively inexpensive, but specially designed equipment and is simply, quickly, and easily placed into practice by, for example, manipulation of same by one or more human operators who are physically located outside said channel head(s) and adjacent said open manway thereby substantially reducing the effective radiation dose heretofore normally associated with such nozzle dam installation and removal.

    摘要: A pneumatically actuated nozzle dam or the like for placement internally of a passageway, enabling the passageway to be sealed off upon inflation of a pneumatically inflatable ring. The apparatus includes an elastomeric diaphragm provided with sidewalls projecting in a downstream direction and joined with sealing flaps surrounding the sidewall and projecting back in an upstream direction. An inflatable pneumatic element is positioned between the sidewall and sealing flap and connected to only one of them. Upon inflation, the sealing flap is forced against the walls of the passageway to provide a seal. If depressurization of the inflatable element occurs, the sealing flap is retained in operative position by pressure of the retained body of liquid on the upstream side of the seal. The new arrangement eliminates the need for redundancy of the pneumatic element and, at the same time, provides for greater safety.
