A side wall for a UHP electric arc furnace includes water cooled panels positioned within the outer shell of the furnace. The panels form water channels and have multiple fins projecting inwardly from the panel into the furnace. The panels including the fins are formed of pure copper or copper alloy which has a high heat conductivity. The fins have a thickness of at least 10 mm and they project horizontally inwardly toward the furnace for at least 70 mm. The fins are spaced vertically apart in the range of 30-80 mm. The space between the fins is filled with a castable refractory.

For this purpose it is suggested that two through-shaped rolled sections with their domed areas facing outwardly, respectively, are welded together and that bores for receiving the ends of pipe connector pieces are introduced into the backside supplemental section and the ends welded thereto, and that the free ends of the rolled sections are closed off by caps.

A wall lining for a furnace (10) includes a refractory layer (14) having a hot face (16) exposed to the interior of the furnace. A plurality of elements of a high thermal conductivity material (18), such as copper wires or rods, extend from the outer shell (12) of the furnace into the refractory lining (14). The elements (18) provide a continuous heat conduction path to the outer shell (12) of the furnace. A cooling jacket (22) removes heat from the outer shell. The elements (18) are dispersed in the refractory lining (14) to provide a substantially uniform temperature across the hot face of the furnace in the vicinity of the elements. The wall lining may be formed by fixing an array of the elements to the inside wall of the outer shell of the furnace and applying a refractory material to the inside wall.

A roof assembly for an electric arc furnace formed by a series of water cooled panels supportingly arranged between the water conveying outer ring and a water conveying center ring encircling the electrode-refractory area. One or more of these panels are constructed of a copper face sheet brazed to a steel backing sheet having groups of several machined traverse passageways, and are located in critical areas in the roof. Communicating with each group of passageways is a water entry header and a water discharge header. The outer ring acts as both a water source and drainage for the panels and center ring. The panels are suspended from a self-supporting spider web structure which carries the center ring and is supported by the outer ring.
