An apparatus and method for processing liquid slag and baghouse dust from a steelmaking furnace such as an EAF to recover valuable metals from the slag and dust includes a treatment vessel having a movable lower shell portion for receiving liquid slag and an upper shell portion that couples with the movable lower shell portion during heat activation of the treatment vessel. The slag is combined with silicon dioxide, a reducing agent, baghouse dust, and an inert gas before being heated to between approximately 1400null C. and 3000null C. The heat treatment results in a molten reduced iron and manganese metallic material, a treated slag layer, and an off-gas containing lead, zinc, and carbon monoxide. The off-gas is combusted, cooled, and solidified, resulting in lead oxide and zinc oxide. The slag layer is tapped, cooled, and solidified. The metallic layer is tapped for recycle in the steel making process.

An electric arc furnace includes a melting vessel having a top opening and an inside wall surface. A removable roof is positioned over the top opening and can be removed for permitting the charging of scrap into the melting vessel. An electrode extends through the roof into the melting vessel. A slag door portion defines a slag discharge opening discharged from the melting furnace. An arcuate configured water-cooled panel includes opposing upper and lower ends and opposing side ends. This water-cooled panel is mounted in the melting vessel above the slag door portion so that the lower end is angled inwardly away from an adjacent inside surface of the melting vessel. The side ends curve toward the adjacent inside surface of the melting vessel to minimize any arcing between the opposing side ends and the electrodes, and to avoid damage from scrap charging. The water-cooled panel forms a scrap free area adjacent to slag door portion.

Direct smelting plant for producing molten metal from a metalliferous feed material induces a smelting vessel 11 to hold a molten metal and slag bath beneath a hot gas space. Solids injection lances 27 extend downwardly and inwardly through side walls of the vessel and hot oxidising gas is directed downwardly into the gas space by a central vertical gas injection lance 26. The plant layout is divided into four functional zones spaced circumferentially around vessel 11 and radiating outwardly from the vessel. Zone 1 contains an overhead hot gas delivery duct 31 supplying gas to lance 26 and an offgas duct 32; Zone 2 contains a forehearth 19 and forehearth tapping launder 34; Zone 3 contains slag notches 45 and slag launders 46; and Zone 4 contains a primary slag drain taphole and launder 48. This layout minimises the potential for interference between the transport of the hot gases, the metaliferous feed material, and the molten metal and slag.

A system for cooling non-ferrous metal dross comprises an open-top metal pan to receive the dross which pan is divided by internal partitions into open-top compartments and has sufficient heat capacity to act as a heat sink to absorb heat from the dross, and a hood shaped to fit over the pan when filled with dross to form a substantially closed cavity round the pan. An inert gas such as argon is introduced into this cavity to displace oxygen and reduce the extent of oxidation of residual metal in the dross.
