The roof has a roof body comprising a top surface having a center opening, a bottom surface opposite the top surface, and an outer sidewall connecting the top surface to the bottom surface. The outer sidewall, the bottom surface and the top surface define an interior portion. An internal spray cooling system is disposed in the interior portion of the body. A drain system is integral with the body. The drain system has a roof evacuation conduit disposed outside the interior portion and configured to collect spay coolant from the interior portion of the body. The drain system additionally has a drain box having a vent and an exit pipe, wherein the roof evacuation conduit channels spent coolant by gravity into the drain box which is evacuated under gravity by the exit pipe.

The automatic sanding hopper system may automatically open a chimney door to provide access to a furnace through a chimney hole. A hopper assembly in the sanding hopper system may automatically move to a position in which a plunger may automatically actuate to clear or clean out the chimney hole. The hopper assembly may thereafter automatically move to a position in which a sand dispenser delivers sand through the chimney hole, into the furnace, and into the tap hole in the furnace. The hopper assembly may automatically retract and the chimney door may automatically close to begin another steelmaking heat.

Each of the direct arc electrodes and plasma torches is extendable and retractable into the melting environment and moveable in a circular pivoting or side to side linear motion.

The heat exchange has at least one panel of sinuously winding piping having an inlet and an outlet, an input manifold in fluid communication with the inlet of the at least one panel, an output manifold in fluid communication with the outlet of the panel, a cooling fluid flowing through the piping, and a stream of hot exhaust gasses flowing over the piping. The heat exchanger system is preferably fabricated using an aluminum bronze alloy. The operational life of the heat exchanger is extended and corrosion and erosion of the heat exchanger and related components is reduced.
