摘要:
Nip width of a glass ribbon advancing on a molten metal bath is determined by repeatedly, at selected intervals, advancing an edge detector from a first home position toward and into contact with the ribbon edge and then back to a second home position. The first and second home positions are compared at the end of each interval to determine nip width and/or change in nip width. The facilities for determining nip width include a detector responsive to fluid pressure changes. Facilities are also taught relating to measurement of substrate displacements by contacting the substrate edge with a pivotal member to activate an electrical system.

A capacitance measuring circuit having a sensor electrode and a reference electrode that are spaced apart so that a material can be positioned between the two electrodes. A first polarity and a second polarity voltage source are used to charge the sensor electrode and a switch controller controls the charging and discharging of a capacitor by the sensor electrode. The charge on the capacitor after being charged and at least partially discharged by the sensor electrode represents the capacitance between the sensor electrode and the reference electrode. The charge on the capacitor is used to measure the position of the material relative to the sensor and reference electrode. The measuring circuit also has a system parasitic controller to measure and adjust for system parasitic capacitance in the measuring circuit.

A pair of glass ribbon edge detectors each have a power source connected to a carbon probe suspended over the molten metal bath of a glass forming chamber and to the molten metal bath to form a pair of capacitors. The voltage output of each capacitor has a first value when the probe is over the molten metal bath, a second value when the probe is over the glass ribbon and a third value when the probe is over a portion of the molten metal bath and a portion of the glass ribbon edge. Displacement and direction of displacement of each probe is used to determine glass ribbon width.A tweel for metering glass onto the molten metal bath has linear displacement gauges mounted at each side thereof and directly connected to the tweel so as to monitor displacement of the tweel to determine the flow of molten glass into the forming chamber. Movement of the tweel in response to the capacitors' output controls the flow of molten glass to control the ribbon width.

The edge to edge width of a moving workpiece is measured as the workpiece is transferred over horizontal table rolls between a pair of spaced apart generally horizontal sideguards extending perpendicularly of the axes of the table rolls. A pair of opposed arms have generally vertical central portions with the upper ends of the arms rotatably mounted to the sideguards about horizontal axes which extend in lengthwise vertical planes along the sideguards. The arms rotate in transverse vertical planes extending between the table rolls and transverse to the direction in which the workpiece moves. Contact rollers adapted to contact the opposed edges of the workpiece are supported at the lower ends of the rotatably mounted arms such that each contact roller contacts a workpiece edge in a transverse vertical plane within about 25.degree. of a lengthwise vertical plane when the center of gravity of the arm and contact roller structure is within about 20.degree. of the lengthwise vertical plane. Position indicators operatively connected with the sideguards and arms indicate the positions of the arms (and contact rollers) relative to the sideguards. The arm (and sideguard) position(s) are outputted to a microprocessor or other computing device for determining the width of the workpiece and what corrective operating action should be taken.
