Methods and apparatus for controlling seismic source firings are disclosed. The methods and apparatus enable firing of seismic sources to increase pressure wave amplitude. Some methods and apparatus reduce ghosting and align first pressure peaks of multiple seismic sources. The multiple seismic sources may be fired sequentially according to active feedback mechanisms. Controlling the firing of the seismic source facilitates more accurate seismic data and a more consistent seismic source signature.

A sound signal body, for generating underwater sound signals, that includes an explosive body which can be thrown out or released by hand. Within the explosive body is arranged an explosive charge as well as a hand grenade detonator having a pyrotechnical delayed detonator composition. The detonator is explodable at the head of the explosive body by a hammer. The sound signal body is provided with a hydraulic pressure switch which comprises a pressure chamber, at least one inlet which empties into the pressure chamber, and a membrane or diaphragm. The diaphragm is connected with a release bolt, which, through the diaphragm and dependent upon the pressure of the water flowing into the pressure chamber, is movable out of a safety position into an armed position. The sound signal body is further provided with a locking mechanism, by means of which it is possible, on the one hand, to arrest the hammer which, against the force of a torsion spring, is deflected in a safety position, as well as, on the other hand, to release the hammer, after obtaining a specific water pressure within the pressure chamber, in cooperation with the release bolt, by relaxing the torsion spring.

Wads of an explosive from 1 to 30 percent as much of a substance intended to lower the electrical resistance of the explosive as there is of said explosive, and from 1 to 30 percent as much of an oxidisable substance as there is of said explosive are propelled, by a compressed gas, along a duct opening into the outside medium. A high voltage is applied between an electrode at the outlet of the duct and an electrode spaced from this outlet, which voltage is applied to the electrodes at an instant determined by the passage of the wad of explosive near the duct outlet.

Apparatus for activating a seismic explosive charge includes a communications link for permitting two-way communication between a control location and a seismic energy generator or explosive charge location, first and second code generators respectively at the control location and the generator location, and first and second code detectors respectively at the control location and the generator location. A code group is transmitted from the control location to the generator location. Upon being detected at the generator location, the code group is retransmitted back to the control location and simultaneously the code group is again detected at the generator location so as to concomitantly produce detection signals at both the generator location and the control location. At the generator location the detection signal is used to activate the seismic explosive charge and at the control location to generate a time break electrical signal. The first arrivals of seismic energy at a location on the earth''s surface substantially vertically above the explosive charge is detected. A counter at the generator location, which is reset whenever a detection signal is generated at the generator location, measures the time interval from the activation of the seismic charge to the detection of the first arrivals. A binary signal indicative of the time interval is transmitted back to the control location where it is recorded or otherwise utilized.
