The present invention is an improved film assemblage of the self-developing type that allows separation of both the pod and trap portions of the film frame, but sealing of the ends of the separated film portions including pod, trap, and image area. The present invention also provides such a film assemblage of the foregoing type whereby further ensuring uniform flow of the processing fluid during the spreading process. A method of manufacturing said film is also provided.

A self-processing photographic film unit has a trap member using a nonwoven cloth in order to catch surplus processing solution. This nonwoven cloth is provided with a polymer having carboxyl groups, and a hardening agent for hardening the polymer in order to prevent leakage and change of color to a frame portion of an image forming plane. A nonwoven cloth according to another embodiment includes a fiber of duplex structure which comprises an external layer of a hydrophilic cross linkage polymer and an internal layer of an acrylonitrile type polymer. A further embodiment includes a nonwoven cloth having dimensions of individual gaps or density which are changed stepwise or continuously. This nonwoven cloth is stored in the trap section so that a portion having a small density or large individual gaps is disposed on the inlet side.

Method of manufacturing a succession photographic film units each comprising rectangular photosensitive and second sheets secured in face-to-face relation by a combination mask and binding sheet formed with a rectangular exposure opening, secured to the outer surface of the second sheet and having marginal portions folded around the end and lateral margins of the photosensitive and second sheets and adhered to the lateral and at least one end margin of the photosensitive sheet. The film unit also includes a rupturable container of processing liquid mounted adjacent the trailing edge of the photosensitive sheet and having portions defining a liquid discharge passage coupled with the photosensitive and second sheets so as to direct the liquid contents of the container therebetween; and a trapping element secured between the trailing end marginal portion of the binding sheet and the trailing end portions of the photosensitive and second sheets for collecting and retaining excess processing liquid overrun. During the assembly process, the binding sheet is in the form of an elongate strip which functions as a carrier on which the other components of a succession of film units are mounted as the carrier is moved between and through a succession of work stations at which assembly operations are performed and the components of each film unit are checked for proper assembly. The binding sheet carries the succession of film units through substantially all assembly and inspection steps except for the last two assembly steps in which the lateral edge portions of the binding sheet-which extend transversely of the carrier strip-are folded and adhered to the photosensitive sheet.

The trap structure includes a partition member dividing a pouch-shaped hollow interior formed by a trap cover member into upper and lower chambers and forming a U-shaped flow path which communicates with gas discharging through-holes formed in the upper surface of the trap cover member. First and second spacer members are provided on the lower and upper surfaces of the partition member with the first and second spacer members permitting the U-shaped flow path to pass gas in the unit while catching surplus processing solution.

A self-processing film unit including an image-recording section, a container for supplying a processing fluid to the image-recording section, and a resiliently flexible carrier permanently attached to the container and separably coupled at its trailing end to the leading end of the image-recording section. The carrier and container are especially adapted to be separated from the image-recording section by deflecting fenders that are spaced in a cooperating camera to engage the lateral edges of the carrier and to bend the carrier with its container into an arcuate path of movement diverging from the imagerecording section. The carrier is notched in both lateral edges at its trailing end, which provides a skirt of reduced transverse dimension that will straighten from the arcuate path and move between the deflecting fenders at approximately the same time the carrier and container are separated from the image-recording section. Thus, the carrier will move itself and the container under the forces of the carrier''s own resiliency to a position where it will not interfere with similar movement of a next successive film unit, and preferably to a generally flat position in a waste-collecting chamber of the camera or a corresponding cartridge in which the film unit was supplied.

The present invention relates to photography and, more particularly, to diffusion transfer process photographic film units which comprise a photosensitive element adapted to provide, by diffusion transfer photographic processing, selective dye image recordation of incident actinic radiation as a function of the point-to-point degree of photosensitive element exposure, which film unit includes a plurality of essential layers including a photosensitive silver halide layer having associated therewith diffusion transfer process dye image-forming material, a layer adapted to receive dye image-forming material diffusing thereto which is a substantially continuous polymeric layer comprising, in essence, a neutral polymer adapted to interact with an aqueous alkaline processing composition in contact with the layer to reduce the alkalinity thereof and to thereby increase the stability of a dye transfer image carried by such layer, and a mordant associated with the layer adapted to mordant dye image-forming material diffusing to the layer; and to specified diffusion transfer processes employing such film units.
