We describe methods of recording a holographic image onto holographic recording film, film bearing recorded holographic images, and apparatus for recording a holographic image onto film, in particular for security holograms. We thus describe a method of recording a holographic image onto holographic recording film (108), said holographic image comprising a 3D object (102) or a hologram of a three-dimensional (3D) object in conjunction with a multi-channel holographic image (106), the method comprising: forming a holographic recording stack by: positioning said holographic recording film (108) over a multichannel image generation device (106); positioning at least one three-dimensional (3D) object (102) under said multichannel image generation device; and providing a transparent window (106b) in said multichannel image generation device in a region above said at least one object (102); and then recording said holographic image in said holographic recording film by illuminating said stack through said holographic recording film with a laser light (110) of at least one wavelength.

In a system for authenticating information, a holographic element, including a first layer of optical information in a first coded pattern and a second layer of optical information in a second coded pattern is inserted into a reader. The reader includes an opening into which the holographic element may be positioned, a light source, a first detector positioned at a first predetermined distance from the location of the holographic element when the holographic element is positioned in the opening, and a second detector positioned at a second predetermined distance from the location of the holographic element when the holographic element is positioned in the opening.

A method for increasing the authentication effect of a verification hologram to be affixed to a protected document includes laser etching individualized indicia into the reflective layer of each hologram produced en masse on a moving, continuous web. The laser is finely focused and guided by a computer which records the data used to form the selected indicia, such data being referenced for comparison to provide verification of authenticity upon presentation by a bearer. In one embodiment, the data used to create the indicia is generated by a computer program which may include a random number generator.

A method wherein a hologram is transferred from a transfer foil formed with a fine dimple pattern and having a reflecting layer, and information, e.g., an image or a character, other than information originally recorded on the hologram is added to the transferred hologram. The method comprises preparing a transfer foil having a reflection relief hologram comprising a resin layer having a fine dimple pattern, e.g., a relief hologram, a relief diffraction grating, etc., formed on the surface thereof, and a reflecting layer formed on the dimpled surface of the resin layer, transferring at least a part of the hologram to the surface of an object, and heating a part of the transferred portion with a heating device, thereby destroying the reflecting layer to record another information. Also disclosed are a method which enables a fine hologram pattern to be readily transferred to a large area, a transfer foil having a reflecting layer which enables a fine dimple pattern to be transferred precisely with excellent foil breaking characteristics, and a method of producing such a fine dimple pattern transfer foil.

We describe methods of mass-producing full color, 3D holograms, potentially incorporating a personalized image, which are particularly suitable for security purposes. Broadly speaking in embodiments a method generates, electronically, an interlaced image comprising a set of different views of a 3D object from different angles. This is projected onto a diffusing screen using coherent light and mapped from the screen into an angularly encoded object beam using a lenticular array. The different views in the angularly encoded object beam are then recorded simultaneously into holographic film using a reference beam.

A method of recording a volume holographic image is described in which a holographic recording medium containing a photoreactive dye is exposed to a plurality of coherent light sources emitting at a wavelength to which the dye is sensitive, thereby forming an interference fringe pattern therein. The photoreaction occurring in the areas of constructive interference generates a periodic array of photoreacted areas of the dye and unreacted areas of the dye. This generated interference fringe pattern may contain, but does not have to contain any image or other encoded information. Selected areas of the interference fringe pattern are then exposed to actinic radiation in such a manner to partially or fully bleach, remove, or deactivate the photoreactive dye fringe pattern, thereby producing a holographic pattern, shape, or image formed by areas of the interference fringe pattern that were not bleached, removed, or deactivated.

Certain types of holographic recording materials can be used to updateably record holographic stereograms formed when fringe patterns are generated through interference of an object laser beam containing image information with a reference laser beam. In this manner, calculation of fringe patterns is avoided, and instead perspective information is computed for a scene or object to be displayed, the information is downloaded to display hardware such as a spatial light modulator, and fringe patterns are subsequently generated through interference of an object laser beam containing this information with a reference laser beam in the classic hologram recording scheme. Previously recorded holographic stereograms or component hogels are updated by erasing the stereograms or component hogels and recording updated stereograms or component hogels, or by recording updated stereograms or component hogels in a separate portion of the holographic recording material.
