A binary bit-string is encoded in a circular image. The circular image encodes substrings of the bit-string in sectors of the circular image and includes redundant bits, error correcting codes, and metadata pertaining to the encoding scheme. To encode the bit-strings, a circular image is generated that includes a center ring and a first ring. Outward from the first ring, additional rings represent bits in the bit-string according to the width of each ring. The exterior of the image includes an outer boundary ring. The width of the boundary rings is used to define the widths representing the value of each ring. To extract a bit-string from an image, the center of the circular image is identified and a direction is selected to evaluate the image outward, determining the boundaries of each ring. The boundaries are analyzed to determine the width of each ring and the encoded bit values.

The coded data has a plurality of layouts which each have order n (at least two) rotational symmetry and encode a codeword of a sequence of n symbols distributed at n locations about a center of rotational symmetry of the respective layout such that decoding the symbols at each of the n orientations of the layout produces n representations of the codeword. Each representation is a different cyclic shift of the codeword and is indicative of the degree of rotation of the layout. The process involves, at the computer system, identifying a layout from an image including the coded data, decoding the identified layout to determine a codeword representation, and determining a degree of rotation of the layout from the determined representation.

A method and apparatus for data encoding and optical recognition of encoded data includes generating symbols that represent data using angles (rather than linear dimensions as used for conventional bar codes). One embodiment uses spirals isocurves. Another uses parabolas isocurves. Methods for visually depicting such symbols, including symbols having gray values are disclosed. Methods for machine-based detection and decoding of such symbols regardless of their orientation relative to the machine is also disclosed.
