A method and apparatus for identifying a media item. The apparatus includes a module for receiving media items and capturing an image of a received media item. The method involves ascertaining external dimensions of the media item from the captured image; creating a monochromatic image based on high contrast boundaries within the captured image; matching the monochromatic image to one of a plurality of templates of media items of approximately the same external dimensions as the media item; and providing details of the matched template, including type and orientation of the media item corresponding to the matched template.

Disclosed is a medium recognition apparatus for determining the type of a medium by using color information obtained by scanning the inserted medium, as well as a method for determining the type of a medium by using the apparatus. Color information and size information obtained by scanning only a partial region of a medium image, the hue of the medium image scanned by the image sensor, or RGB channel color information scanned by the color sensor is compared with pre-stored reference information to determine the type of the medium. This guarantees that the type of the medium is determined quickly and accurately based on simple comparing results.

A bill processing apparatus includes a bill insertion slot, a bill conveyance mechanism capable of conveying the bill inserted from the bill insertion slot, a bill reader reading the conveyed bill, a converter which converts an image read by the bill reader into data for each pixel as a unit of a predetermined size including color information having brightness, an authenticity judging mechanism determining an authenticity based on a density value for each pixel converted by the converter and a density value for each pixel of a reference bill, a bill determination processing part for determining a damage of the bill, before the bill reader completes reading, and a controller controlling the conveyance of the bill based on a determination result by the bill determination processing part.

In one aspect, a method of processing currency in a currency processing machine includes the act of retrieving, from a plurality of input currency bills, characteristic information from each of the bills, the characteristic information itself including at least a first characteristic information relating to fitness. The method also includes the act of assigning to each currency bill one of a plurality of fitness types and fitness levels relating to the first characteristic information of the bill, at least one of the fitness types and the fitness levels being defined by a user. The method also includes the act of outputting each currency bill along one of a plurality of output paths designated by the user to receive currency bills, the output path having a fitness type and/or fitness level assigned to the currency bill.

The present invention relates to various digital watermarking methods, apparatus and systems. One claim recites a method of determining a size or denomination of a momentary object. The method includes: utilizing a configured, multi-purpose electronic processor, decoding a digital watermark embedded in a monetary object, the watermark including data corresponding to a denomination of the monetary object; based on the data, determining feedback to indicate the denomination of the monetary object; and providing the feedback. Handheld computing devices can be advantageously employed with this combination. Of course, other combinations are provided and claimed.

A bill processing apparatus capable of conducting accurately an authenticity judgment of a bill, which is caused to expand or contract, and an authenticity judgment process method employed therein. The bill processing apparatus includes a bill reader reading a bill, a reference data storage part storing an allowable range acceptable from a reference value as a standard length of a printed area on each surface thereof; and a comparison judgment part executing an authenticity judgment process by comparing the corrected data with an allowable ranged for the other surface stored in the storage part, the actual measurement data on the other surface being corrected based on a correction value calculated with respect to the actual measurement data for the one surface, when the actual measurement data of the length of the printed area of the one surface is out of the allowable range.

The present invention provides a paper sheet recognizing apparatus for recognizing paper sheets having different sizes and colors for each type, by using a sensing unit including a line sensor that detects a light quantity of reflected light or transmitted light obtained by irradiating a paper sheet being transported with a plurality of lights having different source wavelengths. The apparatus includes a storing unit that stores therein reference size data and reference light quantity data generated beforehand for each type of paper sheets to be recognition candidates; a first determining unit that selects a recognition target type from the recognition candidates based on detected size data of the paper sheet detected by the sensing unit and the reference size data; and a second determining unit that determines a type of the paper sheet by comparing detected light quantity data of the paper sheet detected by the line sensor with the reference light quantity data of the recognition target type.

For example, there are many devices (e.g., cell phones, video games, calculators, positioning systems and personal computing devices) that include such display devices. One claim recites a device including: an image or video display including a first set of elements and a second set of elements, the first set of elements being varied relative to at least the second set of elements, the first set of elements being arranged to provide a plural-bit device identifier obtainable from optical scan data representing at least a portion of the image or video display, the first set of elements and the second set of elements being arranged so as to conceal the presence of the plural-bit device identifier from a human observer of the display.
