Abstract: Present invention relates to techniques and process of developing and testing a take-home surgical anastomosis simulation model. Through an iterative process, a simulation model was custom designed to target specific skill development and performance objectives that focused on anastomotic techniques in thoracic surgery and consisted of 3D printed and silicone molded components. Various manufacturing techniques such as silicone dip spin coating and injection molding techniques have been explored as part of the research and development process. The final prototype is a low-cost, take-home model with reusable and replaceable components.

Abstract: Proposed is a prefabricated nose model for explaining a rhinoplasty procedure. The prefabricated nose model is used to show a change in the appearance of the nose according to the rhinoplasty procedure. The prefabricated nose model includes a main body having a front surface provided with a nasal bone corresponding portion and having a penetration space provided on a lower side of the nasal bone corresponding portion, a fixing body detachably coupled to the penetration space, an upper lateral cartilage corresponding portion which protrudes forward from the main body while being supported on the fixing body and which is positioned at a lower portion of the nasal bone corresponding portion; and a lower lateral cartilage corresponding portion mounted on a lower side of the upper lateral cartilage corresponding portion such that a position of the lower lateral cartilage corresponding portion is capable of being adjusted.

Abstract: A simulated tissue structure for surgical training is provided. The simulated tissue structure includes a first layer made of silicone and a second layer made of silicone interconnected by a third layer made of polyester fiber that is embedded in part in the first layer and in part in the second layer to create a mechanical linkage between the first layer and the second layer. Part of the third layer that is adjacent to the first layer and part of the third layer that is adjacent to the second layer includes fiber strands coated in silicone. An inclusion that mimics an anatomical structure is located between the first layer and the second layer. The third layer of polyester fibers provides a realistic dissection plane for the practice of the surgical excision of the inclusion.

Abstract: A patient simulation system for healthcare training is provided. The system includes one or more interchangeable shells comprising a physical anatomical model of at least a portion of a patient's body, the shell adapted to be illuminated from within the shell to provide one or more dynamic images viewable on the outer surface of the shells; wherein the system comprises one or more imaging devices enclosed within the shell and adapted to render the one or more dynamic images on an inner surface of the shell and viewable on the outer surface of the shells; one or more interface devices located about the patient shells to receive input and provide output; and one or more computing units in communication with the image units and interface devices, the computing units adapted to provide an interactive simulation for healthcare training. In other embodiments, the shell is adapted to be illuminated from outside the shell.

Abstract: The anatomical model of a nasal cavity, such as a human nasal cavity, for in-vitro inhalation studies such as toxicological screening, intranasal drug delivery studies, and neurophysiological studies. The model includes a model body including separable upper and lower model portions together defining the nasal cavity and including fluidic channels therein that define an olfactory region of the upper model portion, and a nasal passage defined in the lower model portion. A biocompatible porous membrane is positioned between the upper and lower model portions, and the biocompatible membrane is configured for culturing olfactory epithelium cells thereon. An artificial mucous layer coats a surface of the nasal cavity and is configured to collect particles passing through the nasal cavity.

Abstract: A cannulation simulation device and methods for using the device are described. The device is designed to teach dialysis technicians/nurses or patients to cannulate arteriovenous (AV) fistulas for hemodialysis. The simulator includes one or more artificial fistulas. The simulator includes a pad of simulated flesh that can cover the artificial fistula(s). The pad can be reversed, rotated, and replaced with thicker or thinner pads. A personal simulation device for teaching self-cannulation can include a sleeve for a limb that can carry an artificial fistula. A clinical simulation device can include a plurality of artificial fistulas held in a support. Optionally, the artificial fistulas can vibrate to simulate an actual fistula.

Abstract: A surgical simulator for surgical training is provided. The simulator includes a frame defining an enclosure and a simulated tissue model located inside the enclosure. The simulated tissue model is adapted for practicing a number of surgical procedures including but not limited to transanal excisions and transvaginal hysterectomies. The simulated tissue model includes one more components and is interchangeably connected to the frame with fasteners configured to pass through apertures in the frame to suspend the simulated tissue model within the frame. The enclosure of the frame is increasingly laterally constricted along the longitudinal axis to progressively increase the confinement of the components of the simulated tissue model.
