The automatic accompaniment device is constructed such as to convert tone data of a preset accompaniment pattern according to inputted or detected chords so as to generate matched accompaniment sounds. The tonality of performed music is detected by comparison between constituent notes of detected 7th chord or 7sus4 chord and those of a preceding detected chord, based on occurrence of note coincidence therebetween. A particular note name is determined for adjustment based on the detected tonality. The device designates a key code of chord constituent note corresponding to the determined note name so as to adjust the key code, thereby performing automatic performance in conformity with the tonality in natural manner.

In an electronic musical instrument having a first and second array of keyboard switches apparatus is provided for providing fill-in notes sounded by tone generators assigned to the first keyboard. The fill-in notes are selected by selecting one of a library of stored chord types which is closest to the notes played on the second keyboard combined with the highest frequency note played on the first keyboard. The closest decision is made by processing the keyed switch data with two sets of matched filters. The chord type decision is made to correspond to a matched filter combination which produces a maximum output response. A root note is also chosen for the selected chord type. The selected chord type and chosen root note are used to provide the fill-in notes.

An electronic musical instrument provides an automatic tonality designating function capable of automatically designating a desirable tonality based on a chord and a rhythm kind which are respectively designated. The chord is designated by simultaneously depressing plural keyboard keys, while desirable one of plural rhythm kinds which are predetermined in advance is designated by the performer. In addition, a desirable mode can be determined based on the designated chord. Based on the mode, chord and rhythm kind, an automatic accompaniment can be performed. Further, this electronic musical instrument can also provide a chord detecting apparatus capable of automatically detecting a desirable chord based on plural notes (or note names) designated by the performer. In such chord detection, an evasive note is automatically omitted from all notes designated by the performer, so that the desirable chord can be detected with accuracy.

An electronic musical instrument having two keyboards is disclosed in which chords detected on the accompaniment keyboard are used to vary the selected tone color of the tones played on the solo keyboard. The solo tones are synthesized by means of a Fourier transform using a set of harmonic coefficients. Selected harmonic coefficients are scaled in magnitude in response to the chord type detected from the notes played on the accompaniment keyboard.

A keyboard operated electronic musical instrument is disclosed for imitating the strummed and solo modes of playing plucked fretted musical instruments. The actuated keys do not directly control the set of tone generators, but are used to automatically select one of a library of chord types which is closest to the actuated keys. A root note is chosen for each selected chord type. The selected chord type is transposed to an open chord spanning the several octaves associated with a guitar-type instrument. The selected tone generators assigned to the transposed open chord are strum keyed in sequence at a rate adaptive to the speed in which successive chords are entered on the keyboard. Provision is made for up-down strumming and to automatically enter a solo tone mode when a sequence of single notes are entered on the keyboard.

In an electrical keyboard musical instrument apparatus is provided for automatically selecting one of a library of chord types which is closest to a chord played on the instrument. The closest decision is made by processing the actuated keyswitch data by a set of matched filters each of which corresponds to a member of the library of chord types. The chord type decision is made to correspond to the matched filter producing the maximum output response. The selection between chord types yielding equal responses is resolved by priority logic based upon the frequency of chord usage. A root note is chosen for each selected chord type.

The bass note generation system provides one of several different types or styles of bass-line accompaniment for the organist. A chord pattern detector receives signals on keying lines corresponding to keys depressed by the instrument player and attempts to recognize a normalized chord pattern. A counter tracks the operation of the chord pattern detector and provides an output corresponding to the alphabetic note of any recognized chord. If the chord pattern is recognized, the output of the detector and the output of the counter address a normalized and preprogrammed bassline pattern memory. The digital value of the bass note stored in the memory and the outut of the counter are serially added to transpose the normalized bass note to the appropriate musical key and applied to a decorder-keyer circuit at selected time intervals in a musical measure for providing a precomposed musical bassline output. If the instrument player closes the root/fifth switch on the instrument console and the chord pattern detector recognizes a normalized pattern of depressed keys, a digital bass note value corresponding to the root or the fifth bass note of the recognized chord is applied to the decoder-keyer circuit. If the chord pattern detector fails to recognize the combination of keys depressed by the instrument player as a normalized chord pattern, the system defaults into a scanning mode of operation. In the scanning mode, the preprogrammed bassline pattern memory is disabled and the system provides a fixed bassline routine with the notes selected from among the keys actually depressed by the instrument player. If the instrument player selects the root/fifth mode of operation and the combination of depressed keys is not a recognizable chord pattern, the system provides a low-high select routine with the notes corresponding to the lowest and highest frequency keys actually depressed.

Embodiments of the present invention provide a tonal analysis method including the steps of parsing notes of a musical score to generate a time-ordered plurality of sonorities; confirming a plurality of tonal centers each having a tone; accounting a chord of a sonority for a confirmed tonal center to determine whether the chord of the sonority is a functional symbol of the confirmed tonal center; and identifying a tonally stable region of the musical score for a confirmed tonal center, then accounting the chord of each sonority in a tonally stable region as a functional symbol of that tonal center. Embodiments of the present invention provide a non-transitory computer-readable medium which stores the output of the tonal analysis method as sonority data structures associated with theory line entry data structures.

A musical keyboard includes a plurality of white keys and black keys. As a number of keys are depressed simultaneously, a pattern of the depressed keys is judged as categorized in a number of predetermined patterns of depressed keys in view of the white keys and the black keys based on the input note data acquired from the depressed keys. A plurality of types of harmonization are predetermined, from among which a type of harmonization is determined. According to the determined type of harmonization, the input note data representing the notes of the depressed keys are adjusted so that inadequate notes included in the input notes are changed to adequate notes to constitute a chord as permitted by the type of harmonization in view of musical grammar. An unskilled player can play music incorporating improvisation which would need higher musical skill, as the inadvertently erroneous depression of the keys is rectified in the note data processing.

A musical instrument and a method of operating it. An instrument and method which retunes and adjusts volumes in response to the chord being sustained and the way that chord is voiced. The instrument is capable of producing tones, the intervals between which are equal tempered intervals of a twelve note octave, and tones, the intervals between at least some of which are determined by identifying at least selected ones of the notes the instrument is being commanded to produce. The method includes identifying the at least selected ones of the notes the instrument is being commanded to produce, providing a map for mapping the identified notes to a chord type, identifying a note in that chord type, and substituting a frequency closer to a harmonic of the identified note for the frequency of at least one harmonic of at least one other note the instrument is being commanded to produce.
