摘要： An automatic telephone answering machine which is capable of selecting a new outgoing message or an old outgoing message. If a new OGM is unsatisfactory, the operator may retain an old OGM and discard the new OGM. Both a semiconductor memory and a magnetic tape are utilized in switching the OGM's from one to the other. The OGM stored in the semiconductor memory is automatically checked and read out at least once at an end of storage of the OGM in the semiconductor memory, and thereafter the OGM is automatically read out again and transferred to and recorded in an area of a magnetic tape.

摘要： A reset system for a telephone answering machine which, in the event of power failure, or disconnection from the power source, will reset the telephone answering machine when power is restored to the condition it was in prior to the power failure. The system is applicable to both single tape machines in which the outgoing announcement and incoming messages are all recorded on one magnetic tape, and dual tape machines in which the outgoing announcements are recorded on one magnetic tape and the incoming messages are recorded on a second magnetic tape. The system of the invention serves to determine whether there were incoming messages on the incoming message tape when the power failed and if so, the end of the last recorded incoming message is located so that when power is restored the incoming message tape can be set to the same position it was in when power was lost.

摘要： A tape head control arrangement for a telephone answering machine. The outgoing message is recorded on the first track of a recirculating multi-track tape. The record-playback tape head is movable over the plurality of available tracks on the tape. Movement of the tape head is controlled by a cam connected to a rachet which is rotated by a solenoid in discrete steps, each step corresponding to movement of the tape head to the next available track. When no incoming calls have been received the tape head is positioned at track two of the tape in a standby mode of operation. When the first incoming call is received the solenoid is automatically actuated and a control arrangement moves the tape head to the first track to play the outgoing message. At the conclusion of the outgoing message corresponding to a complete circuit of the tape the solenoid is deactivated and the cam allows movement of the tape head back to the second track for the record mode of operation. On each succeeding call the tape head control always moves the tapehead first to the number one track to play the outgoing message and the cam control allows the tape to move sequentially to the next unused track. When all available tracks have been used a disable mechanism renders the arrangement non-responsive to further incoming calls.

摘要： A direct coupled telephone answering device having an announcement deck for recording and reproducing an announcement in response to an incoming call and a message deck for recording and reproducing incoming messages. Forward and reverse tape motion for both decks is provided by a single flywheel and a simple system of drive belts. All rotating reels are mounted for free rotation on fixed spindles. Hubs in these wheels, which preferably are formed of plastic, comprise bearings which ride on such spindles, promoting uniform bearing wear even with substantial side-loading on the wheels. A single syllabic detector coupled to an announcement time-out circuit and a message time-out circuit provides control signals for various switching functions at predetermined time periods after termination of the announcement and message, thus affording a broad variable timing cycle for both the announcement deck and the message deck. Circuitry is provided for individually varying the durations of the time periods.
