Compositions are provided which, when burned, produce significant levels of infrared radiation, but only limited levels of visible radiation. The basic components of the compositions include a binder, an oxidizer, and a fuel, where the binder also acts the fuel. Preferred oxidizers include those compounds which produce large quantities of infrared radiation when the flare composition is burned. Such oxidizers include potassium nitrate, cesium nitrate, rubidium nitrate, and combinations of these compounds. Selection of the binder is important in order to provide the composition with the desirable characteristics identified above. The binder of the present invention does not produce significant soot. At the same time, the binder serves to form a composition which is processible, avoids chunking, and is compatible with the oxidizers used. It has been found that polymer binders which include relatively short carbon chains (1-6 continuous carbon atoms) are preferred. Examples of such polymers include polyesters, polyethers, polyamides, and polyamines.

High intensity yellow smoke and flame flare compositions are manufactured a procedure which closely parallels that of solid rocket propellants. These compositions use similar ingredients to those used in solid rocket propellants. These compositions are castable whereas conventional flares consist of pressed flare charges. Both colored flame and smoke are produced from the same composition. A liquid curable binder composition is selected from triethylene glycol succinate or carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene crosslinked with O,NN-tris(2,3-epoxypropyl)-4-aminophenol, and hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene crosslinked with isophorone diisocyanate. The color producing ingredient is a first inorganic salt of lead iodide which can be further enhanced by an additive of a reactive source of iodine selected from iodine pentoxide and iodoform. A second inorganic salt is selected from inorganic oxidizing salts consisting of potassium perchlorate and amononium perchlorate. An optional additive of a magnesium metal is used where a good flame of yellow color is required. A large yellow-colored cloud produced from specific compositions is due to the condensation of the inorganic oxides and halides which produce submicron combustion particulates which do not undergo settling, or sedimentation. Their high specific surface area functions to enhance the color and to increase the size of the flare cloud.

An improved pyrotechnic fuel composition comprising a metal fuel and a contional pyrotechnic oxidizer for producing light, heat, smoke and sound through an exothermic reaction wherein the improvement comprises the use of a metal hydride as the fuel ingredient to produce a pyrotechnic composition which readily ignites and which has a lower burning rate for increased luminous intensity. The metal hydride fuel is preferably selected from the group consisting of magnesium hydride, titanium hydride, sodium borohydride and a lithium aluminum hydride.

Launching of the signal from underwater arms the signal, however, the signal is not initiated until the ambient sea pressure reaches a predetermined pressure valve. When this predetermined pressure valve is reached, sea water enters a cavity and energizes a battery which detonates an electric squib. The squib, in turn, ignites a smoke composition in the signal housing.

An injection moldable flammable composition consisting of a powder comprising 30-80 percent of red phosphorus and 70-20 percent of a polymeric binder comprising polyethylene, polypropylene, or copolymer thereof. Flammability and stability may be increased by the addition of lesser quantities of polystyrene and ignition aids and anti-oxidants such as aluminum oxide. Flammable strikers and other useful devices may be molded from this composition.
