Composite propellant compositions are disclosed which contain binders formed from polybutadiene prepolymers cross-linked by siloxane compounds. The crosslinking by siloxanes to produce propellant binders eliminates the need for end-capping polybutadiene to introduce functional groups through which crosslinking can be effected. The pertinent siloxane compounds contain two silicon hydride bonds of the types present in: 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane, (CH3)2H.SiO.SiH(CH3)2; 1,1,1 3,5,7,7,7-octamethyltetrasiloxane, (CH3)3.Si.O.Si(H.CH3).O.Si(H.CH3).O.Si(CH3)3. The prepolymers are crosslinked in a composite propellant composition to produce the propellant binder for the composition. When the crosslinking technique is used in a propellant production process which additionally employs hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene in combination with a polyisocyanate, a propellant binder with improved mechanical properties and improved stability is produced.

A method of blending pyrotechnic mixtures of the class which include an organic binder, fuel powder and oxidizer powder, comprising the dissolving of the binder in a first solvent in which it is substantially soluble and in which the fuel and oxidizer powders are substantially insoluble so as to form a binder solution, mixing the fuel and oxidizer powders into said binder solution, adding a second solvent to the product of the foregoing steps in which second solvent the binder, fuel powder and oxidizer powder are substantially insoluble in an amount sufficient to cause the precipitation of the major proportion of the binder, and then removing the solvents and drying the precipitate. This method produces a uniformly granulated product which needs no mechanical handling to secure the mixture or granulation, these properties being obtained in a wet environment devoid of the risk of explosion.

A deflagrating composition yielding a gas comprising principally carbon dioxide and water vapor comprises a substantially homogeneous mixture of powders preferably having an average particle size less than about 25 microns. The composition has an oxygen bearing oxidizing powder and an organic reducing powder having the formula CxHyOz, having a melting point greater than about 165*F, and a sufficiently low vapor pressure to have no more than a minute amount of sublimation prior to oxidation by the oxidizing powder upon ignition. The oxidizing powder and reducing power or ''''fuel'''' are sufficiently near stoichiometry to produce a gas comprising principally carbon dioxide and water vapor upon combustion for inflation of an automobile restraint bag with a non-toxic, at least partly condensable gas. In one embodiment the mixture further comprises an endothermic decomposition coolant having a thermal decomposition product selected from the class consisting of carbon dioxide and water and decomposable below the combustion temperature of the mixture. A method of this invention comprises inflation of a gas bag by combustion of a mixture like that described above. In one embodiment, the mixture may include a reducible metal oxide having a decomposition temperature in the same range as ferric oxide. In another embodiment the mixture is burned adjacent a reservoir of water for producing vapor for inflating the bag, to be followed by rapid deflation as the vapor condenses.
