Arms extend between the screw-receiving openings from one screw-receiving opening to the adjacent screw-receiving openings. The four arms of four adjacent screw-receiving openings create a rhombus shaped central opening.

A bone distractor is created which grips bones along their edges and then applies an expansion force between the two bone edges. This expansionary force is used to encourage bone growth and elongation. Two clamps are used; each of the clamps is adapted to engage opposing edges of a bone. A rod extends from one clamp and presses against the other clamp; due to the threads on the clamp and the rod, a turn of the rod applies an expansion force between the two clamps. By selective application of this force, the bone naturally grows and elongates. The invention is particularly useful for craniofacial structures. Not only does the apparatus elongate the bone, but due to the nature of the clamping and forces applied over time, the adjacent soft tissue is also naturally elongated.

A small bone plate suitable for use, for example, on the cranial skeleton, on the facial skeleton and on micro fragments of other skeleton sections is provided. The bone plate is formed from webs joining screw hole boundaries in a particular fashion; and the plate can be bent in its plane, without deformation of the screw hole boundaries. Thus, insertion of bone screws into the small bone plate is not hindered by deformed screw hole boundaries. The bone plate can be single-legged or multiple-legged. Also provided is a special type of bone screw especially suitable for use with the small bone plate of the invention. The bone screw has a cross-slotted head, with the bottoms of the slots being concave. The screw is also preferably self-tapping and preferably has a conical tip.
