The present invention is directed to golf balls having a resilient inner core and outer core made of a material substantially free of fillers. The invention also encompasses golf balls wherein the inner and outer cores are not made of a thermoplastic material. The invention encompasses golf balls having an inner core, an outer core, an inner cover, and an outer cover wherein the inner core is encased by an outer core wherein the inner core has a volume greater than the outer core, inner cover, or outer cover and the inner core is made of a material substantially free of fillers. The volume relationship of the inner core (V12), outer core (V14), inner cover (V16), and outer cover (V18) is represented by the mathematical relationship: V12>2.5(V14+V16+V18), wherein V14≧V18≧V16. Also, the inner core has a specific gravity &rgr;12, the outer core has a specific gravity &rgr;14, the inner cover has a specific gravity &rgr;16, and the outer cover has a specific gravity &rgr;18, wherein the relationship between the specific gravities is expressed by the mathematical expression: &rgr;16≧&rgr;18≧&rgr;14≧&rgr;12.

A multi-piece golf ball includes a rubbery elastic core, a cover having a plurality of dimples on the surface thereof, and at least one intermediate layer between the core and the cover. The intermediate layer is composed of a resin material which is harder than the cover. The elastic core has a hardness which gradually increases radially outward from the center to the surface thereof. The center and surface of the elastic core have a hardness difference of at least 18 JIS-C hardness units. This construction and combination of features improve the distance of the ball when struck with a driver, provide the ball with excellent spin characteristics and thus good controllability on approach shots, and gives the ball a good feel on impact, enabling the ball to meet the high expectations of skilled golfers.

The invention provides a multi-piece solid golf ball having improved flight performance, controllability and good shot feel at the time of hitting. The multi-piece solid gold ball has a core having at least one layer, an intermediate layer formed on the core, and a cover covering the intermediate layer. When thickness of the intermediate layer is represented as X (mm) and JIS-C hardness of the intermediate layer is represented as Y, then X is 0.3 to 1.5 mm, X and Y have a correlation represented 10X+55≦Y≦10X+75, and the JIS-C hardness of the cover is 70 to 93.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a process to increase adhesion between two adjacent layers. The process comprises roughening the surface of one layer followed by chlorination of the roughened surface and joining of the layers, or treating the surface of one layer with a silicone-based adhesion promoter and joining the layers. In one preferred embodiment the process comprises roughening the surface of one layer, followed by chlorination of the roughened surface, joining of the layers and post-treatment of the molded layers at an elevated temperature for a predetermined time.

A golf ball having a thermosetting polyurethane cover composed of a blend of polyurethane prepolymers is disclosed herein. The blend may be a dual blend with a TDI-based polyurethane prepolymer blended with a second diisocyanate polyurethane prepolymer, typically a PPDI-based polyurethane prepolymer. The blend may also be a tri-blend with a TDI-based polyurethane prepolymer blended with two other diisocyanate polyurethane prepolymers, typically two different PPDI-based polyurethane prepolymers. The golf ball has a durability of at least 3.5 on a shear test rating of the cover.

The present invention is directed toward more durable golf ball cores and more durable golf balls. The golf balls of this invention comprise a cover and a core wherein the core may further comprise a center and one or more layers of a mantle disposed between the center and the cover. The core, the mantle or the layers of the mantle, comprise a mixture of one or more thermoset rubber materials and at least one compatible, modified, non-ionic polyolefin. The non-ionic polyolefin that is modified may be a homopolymer, copolymer, terpolymer, block copolymer or a mixture thereof that is present at about 0.5 to about 10 parts per hundred of the thermoset rubber material used in the core or core layer.

The present invention provides a hollow solid golf ball having excellent flight performance and soft and good shot feel at the time of hitting. The present invention relates to a hollow solid golf ball comprising a core having a hollow portion at the center of the core and a cover formed on the core, wherein the golf ball has a diameter of 42.92 to 45.47 mm, a moment of inertia of 83 to 105 g·cm2, and a deformation amount of 2.6 to 4.0 mm, when applying from an initial load of 10 kgf to a final load of 130 kgf.

A unique golf ball and related methods of manufacturing are disclosed in which the golf ball comprises one or more metal mantle layers that define a hollow interior within the ball. The golf ball may also comprise an optional polymeric hollow spherical substrate inwardly disposed relative to the one or more metal mantle layers. The golf balls according to the present invention exhibit improved spin, feel, and acoustic properties. Furthermore, the one or more interior metal layers prevent, or at least significantly minimize, coefficient of restitution loss from the golf ball.
