The present invention relates to a method of retrofitting a Bridgeport Series One vertical milling machine with a variable speed drive unit. The method generally comprises the removal of a drive motor and stepped pulley attached thereto from the pulley housing of the Series One milling machine. The drive motor and stepped pulley are replaced with a variable speed drive unit comprising a drive housing which is attached to the pulley housing via a flange member formed on the bottom surface thereof. The flange member is specifically configured to be easily retrofittable to the existing aperture defined within the pulley housing by the removal of the drive motor therefrom.

A nut runner for tightening screwed objects comprising: a driving motor, a driving shaft to be coupled to the screwed objects for driving the same, a reduction gear mechanism provided for transferring the revolution power of the driving motor to the driving shaft, a torque for detecting a torque applied to the driving shaft, and a control circuit for controlling the driving motor by the use of the detected output of the torque detector. In accordance with the present invention, a two-phase induction motor is employed as the driving motor. The control circuit is formed to control the magnitudes, periods and phases of intermittent currents supplied to the field coils of the two-phase induction motor so that the torque of the two-phase induction motor is controlled by the control of the magnitude of the intermittent currents, so that the revolution speed of the two-phase induction motor is controlled by the control of the periods of the intermittent currents, and so that the forward and backward driving directions are switched by the switching of phase relations of the intermittent currents.

A peck-drilling apparatus for quill feed units of the type having a frame member and a tool quill of the type adapted for reciprocative movement with respect to said frame member, together with the usual means to rapidly advance a tool toward a workpiece preparatory to performing a machining operation thereon, means to slowly advance the tool while said machining operation is taking place, and means to rapidly retract said tool at the conclusion of said machining operation, wherein a peck-drilling operation is accomplished by providing a plurality of cam mounting bars fixedly mounted to the tool quill parallel to the axis of reciprocation and having various cams mounted thereon, said cams adapted to operate limit switches fixedly mounted to frame member as they pass thereby. The limit switches, together with a timer, are connected to the various operating means to rapidly advance the tool quill to the workpiece, feed the tool quill at a slow rate of speed for a time interval preset on the timer, and then to rapidly retract the tool quill to its original starting position and there-upon to return it to where the tool just finished cutting previously and again feed the tool for the preset time interval, and to repeat this cycle until the desired depth of cut is reached.
