On the rear end of the drill quill is located an offset piston, the offset piston provides force for the entry and exit of the drill quill into or from a workpiece. On the rear end of the motion transfer arm is an engagement am which is constructed and arranged to engage a piston rod which extends from a damping cylinder.

The feed control device includes a hydraulic cylinder to be engaged with a quill, which is reciprocated by a pneumatic feed device, on the forward midway thereof, a slidable member disposed on a frame in such a manner as to be able to move by a predetermined distance in the movement direction of a ram of the hydraulic cylinder, and coupling device retained on the slidable member for linking the slidable member and the ram. When the quill is once returned backwards in the course of a drilling cycle the ram is also returned backwards together with the slidable member by the predetermined distance, and when the quill is moved forward again the quill is engaged with the ram at a position a little short of the position where the previous drilling cycle was interrupted for being switched there from rapid speed down to slow speed.

    摘要: A peck-drilling apparatus for quill feed units of the type having a frame member and a tool quill of the type adapted for reciprocative movement with respect to said frame member, together with the usual means to rapidly advance a tool toward a workpiece preparatory to performing a machining operation thereon, means to slowly advance the tool while said machining operation is taking place, and means to rapidly retract said tool at the conclusion of said machining operation, wherein a peck-drilling operation is accomplished by providing a plurality of cam mounting bars fixedly mounted to the tool quill parallel to the axis of reciprocation and having various cams mounted thereon, said cams adapted to operate limit switches fixedly mounted to frame member as they pass thereby. The limit switches, together with a timer, are connected to the various operating means to rapidly advance the tool quill to the workpiece, feed the tool quill at a slow rate of speed for a time interval preset on the timer, and then to rapidly retract the tool quill to its original starting position and there-upon to return it to where the tool just finished cutting previously and again feed the tool for the preset time interval, and to repeat this cycle until the desired depth of cut is reached.

    摘要: A pneumatic air feed peck drill adapted to drill in repetitive cycles including a rapid advance phase, a slower drilling phase, and a rapid retract phase. The rapid advance phase ends and the drilling phase begins at a set back position, an adjustable distance from the workpiece, to minimize a drill bit and workpiece damage. The drill includes a drill motor and feed cylinder powered by air to rotate and advance and retract the drill motor. The drill motor and feed cylinder is coupled with an air and mechanical control system including a hydraulic feed control unit having a piston rod coupled with the drill motor to dampen the advance of the drill motor during the drilling phase and to release for rapid retract and advance phases. A brake is mounted for control of the feed control unit piston rod to releasably engage the piston rod during the retract phase to limit the movement of the rod to an adjustable set back distance controlled by a set back nut limiting the distance the brake may move relative to the feed control unit when the brake engages the piston rod. A pneumatic system including a volume chamber is coupled with the air system to control the peck cycle rate. One embodiment of the drill includes an auxiliary thrust and retract piston assembly while another embodiment has only the primary drill motor and feed cylinder.
