A cutting head has at least two spaced apart disk-saws for producing respective slicing cuts in an article of wood, the saws defining respective distinct outer cutting diameters. Preferably, the disk-saws are bolted to the cutting head and spaced apart therefrom adjustable amounts by interdisposed control plates of predetermined thicknesses. Preferably, a first one of the disk-saws defines an annular ring having an inner diameter, and the outer cutting diameter for the first disk-saw is greater than the outer cutting diameter of a second one of the disk-saws. The outer cutting diameter of the second disk-saw is then less than the inner diameter of the first disk-saw, so that the second disk-saw is nested inside the first disk-saw while remaining axially displaceable therefrom. Preferably, the cutting head is relieved behind at least the cutting teeth of the second disk-saw to permit sawdust that migrates past the second disk-saw, into the space defined by the inner diameter of the first disk-saw, the second disk-saw and the cutting head, to exit through the cutting head.

It is characteristic by the construction of the entrance turnover device transversely placed between longitudinal conveyors with carriers, which has on the periphery of rotating wheels constructed movable bearing couplings, and by them fixed guiding plates with the groove inside which there are movably inserted guided bearings of bearing couplings. In the area of the entrance turnover device there are placed under an optional angle the oblique roller conveyors, inside which there are flexibly and circularly movably inserted rolls. Between the longitudinal conveyors there is placed the endless conveying chain, which has to its entire extent fastened clamping units that have inside the fixed housing inserted the clamping mechanism, the operation of which is regulated by the control field and control indicator. Over the free corner of the longitudinal conveyor there runs the oblique conveyor with carriers tilted to the longitudinal conveyor. Between longitudinal conveyors there is transversely placed the exit turnover device, which has on the periphery of rotating wheels constructed movable bearing cranks, being through the chain connected with the control chain wheel and control panel, the guided bearing of which is movably inserted inside the channel guide fixed on the rotating wheels.

The present invention relates to a method for cutting a cant (5) from a log (4), consisting in: a) measuring and recording the profile and dimensions of the log (4); b) fixing the log (4) at its longitudinal ends between two spikes (20) of a carriage (14) that can move along a runway path (16); c) positioning cutting tools (22, 24) and saw blades (26) according to the data measured and recorded at (a); d) moving the log (4) into a cutting unit comprising the cutting tools (22, 24) and the saw blades (26), making at least one pass so as to cut the cant (5) from the log (4). This method consists in performing the following sequence of steps: e) parting off, from each side of the log (4), end planks (32) so as to obtain two flat base surfaces (4a) on the said log (4); f) making a cut (34) along each longitudinal edge of the base surfaces (4a); g) and parting off, from each side of the log (4), a first plank (38) of rectangular cross section, the thickness of which corresponds to the depth of cut (34).
