A mold for manufacturing interlocking, dry-cast concrete retaining wall blocks in an upright orientation comprises a mold box comprising two side walls joined to end walls to define a mold cavity, a top face, and a substantially open bottom face. Partitions configured to define a space between adjacent blocks or a space between a block and a side of the mold box extend parallel to the side walls of the mold box substantially from the top face into the mold cavity, to form first transverse portions of the profile of the top and bottom surfaces the blocks which do not include any undercut portion that would impede removal of the mold box in a substantially vertical direction. At least one removable insert comprises insert members which, when positioned in the mold box beneath the partitions, form remaining transverse portions of the profile of the top and bottom surfaces, the remaining transverse portions including at least one undercut portion. The insert members, when in position in the mold box for casting, are substantially in lateral alignment with respective bottom surfaces of at least some of the partitions and can be inserted and retracted through openings in an end wall of the mold box.

A block-forming toy includes a plunger, a mold and an ejector plate. The plunger includes a shaft that passes through a barrel. The two pieces are able to move with respect to one another. Each piece connects to either the mold or the ejector plate, using male and female locking mechanisms. Subsequent to assembling the toy, the mold may be filled and packed with a moldable material. By pulling the plunger up to move the mold upwards relative to the ejector plate, and thus relative to the casted article, the block-forming toy may be used to easily remove the formed block of moldable material from the mold. A variety of mold shapes may be used to create additional blocks to form structures of moldable material. Examples of moldable material include sand and snow.

Molds and processes that permit high-speed, mass production of retaining wall blocks having patterned or other processed front faces, as well as retaining wall blocks formed by such processes. The invention permits the front face of the block to be impressed with a pattern or otherwise directly processed, to allow the formation of pre-determined block front faces, while at the same time facilitating high-speed, high-volume production of blocks. A mirror image of the desired pattern can be created on a stripper shoe by selecting a desired three-dimensional surface from a naturally occurring or man made object and digitally scanning the selected three-dimensional pattern to create scanned data. The scanned data can then be used to machine a face of the stripper shoe that is the mirror image of the selected pattern.

An apparatus for making concrete brick in a manner such that at least both elongated sides of the brick have an antique appearance. In the apparatus a first hopper is provided which discharges coloring material onto an empty pallet that passes below the same. The pallet is moved into a concrete brick-making machine where a plurality of bricks are formed on their sides with the lowermost side in engagement with the coloring material. Thereafter a second hopper discharges coloring material onto the upper side of the bricks and such coloring material on the top is spread lengthwise. The forming of the bricks on the coloring material on the pallet provides a mottled effect on one side of the brick and the spreading of the coloring material provides a streaked effect on the other side so that a different antique appearance is imparted to opposite sides of the brick.

A mold for forming concrete articles comprises a face mold and a compression lid which are relatively configured so that the compression lid can be progressively inserted within the face mold to define a mold cavity which decreases in size. The mating edges of the face mold and compresssion lid define a relief area between them adjacent to, and communicating with the cavity. Each mating edge has a flange, and the flanges abut and prevent further insertion of the compression lid into the face mold when the proper size of the article being formed is attained. The mating edges further have corrugations defining a plurality of channels which extend between the relief area and the exterior of the mold. Excess water from concrete mixture being compressed between the face mold and compression lid can flow from the cavity, through the relief area, through the channels, and out of the mold.

An apparatus for molding concrete-blocks within a molding box which is suspended, whereby vibrations are applied to the molding box uniformly in all the directions, that is, up and down, left and right, back and forth during the molding process. Uneven distribution of the concrete aggregates is avoided and homogeneous, high density and high quality concrete-blocks can be molded efficiently. Furthermore, this apparatus is provided with means to prevent transmission of the vibrations to the apparatus body.

A powder pressing device, such as a metal powder or ceramic powder pressing device includes at least one die and at least one punch. In a pressing position, the punch is arranged to be immersible from a first side of the die into a cavity filled with powder. The powder pressing device further includes at least one powder sealing device, which can have at least two parts. The powder sealing device can be arranged in sections, which can be arranged completely around the cavity.

A method for making reconstituted limestone blocks includes using a batching plant to make a mixture comprising crushed limestone and cement. The mixture may additionally include water and an additive, such as a plasticizer. The batching plant has been modified to be compatible with the mixture. Next, the mixture is transferred from the batching plant to a mobile stamping machine having a mold box, a hopper, and a feed apparatus configured for transferring the mixture from the hopper to the mold box. Finally, the mobile stamping machine is activated so that the mobile stamping machine forms a construction block by transferring the mixture from the hopper to the mold box, depositing the construction block out of the mold box, and then moving to a next location. The mobile stamping machine is configured to produce approximately 100 construction blocks per hour.

The present invention provides a wet press process and admixture components for making concrete slabs (flags) (16), curb (kerb) units, panels, boards, and other flat shapes, whereby colloidal silica and at least one alkanolamine and optional rheology control components are employed to provide an ideal combination of pressing time, green strength, surface definition, stack-ability, final concrete strength, and permeability. Stack-ability can be expressed in terms of minimum deflection or non-eccentricity of the units while standing on thickness edges at distances apart less than width or standing height. A wet press process typically involves introducing a highly fluid concrete mix into a mold (10,12), applying hydraulic pressure to consolidate the concrete (e.g., 1000-3000 PSI) and to extract excess water, removing the pressed concrete (16) while in a green state from the mold (10,12), and then standing the slab (16) units immediately upon removal from the mold (10,12) while in a green state, on an edge adjacent to but spaced apart from other edge-standing units. In further embodiments, rounded aggregates such as naturally occurring sand and/or gravel obtained from local sources can be incorporated into the concrete slabs without defeating (vertical) stack-ability in the green state.
