A screen printing system has multiple screen cassettes stored in a magazine and a first screen cassette is transferred from the magazine into a printing station. A motorized pallet conveyor conveys a plurality of substrates, each of which is loaded one of a series of pallets of the conveyor, into and from the printing station and about an endless path. After printing the first image or color, the first screen cassette is returned to the magazine and a second preregistered screen cassette is brought to the printing station with a second image or color being printed on each substrate as the pallets carrying the substrates are conveyed into and from the printing station. Preferably, the substrates and pallets are maintained in a horizontal position while they travel laterally, downwardly and upwardly when moving along the endless path. The magazine preferably is motorized with the cassettes being shifted vertically within the magazine to and from a transfer position from which the cassettes are transferred laterally to the printing station. A manual squeegee may be used for the screen printing operation.

A system for accurately registering multiple silkscreens relative to a printing surface after they have been clamped into a silkscreen holder of a printing head of a rotary screen printing machine, and for accurate placement of an image on a framed silkscreen. A generally L-shaped registration device attached adjacent to one side of a pallet of the printing machine has first and second sides orthogonal relative to each other with a pair of gauges having visual displays positioned on the first side and a third gauge positioned on the second side. The gauges have outwardly biased plungers controlled by a lever to be simultaneously moved between a retracted positioned, a free-floating position and an engaged position relative to respective first and second sides of a silkscreen frame. The gauge displays allow the operator to take numerical readings to determine if, and how much, a frame has shifted from a zero setting after being clamped in the frame holder, which frame has shifted, to quickly re-register a frame to its previous setting, and to compensate for frames having misaligned images. Another aspect of the invention is an exposure frame for use in conjunction with the registration device having three contacts corresponding to the plunger positions of the registration device that engage a framed silkscreen during exposure of the image to create silkscreens having images aligned relative to the registration frame.

A screen printing press is provided for printing on a web having defined, successive areas and indicia provided in predetermined positions relative to each of the defined areas. The press includes a base defining a work station, a screen supported on the base for movement between a printing position overlying the work station and an interrupted position, and a web handling assembly for advancing the web along a path of travel to successively feed the defined areas of the web toward the work station. A registration system successively positions the defined areas of the web in a desired predetermined relationship to the screen as successive defined areas are brought into a position to be printed. The registration system includes longitudinal, lateral and angular shifting mechanisms for adjusting the longitudinal, lateral and angular alignment between the screen and the web. Sensors are provided for sensing the correct positions and orientation of the indicia that are occupied when the defined areas of the web are in the predetermined relationship relative to the screen, and a controller is responsive to the sensors for controlling the longitudinal, lateral and angular shifting mechanisms to adjust the alignment between the screen and the web until the correct positions and orientation of the indicia are sensed.

An apparatus for securing a screen printing frame to a printing machine for screen printing, the apparatus has a retainer for the screen printing frame and a mounting head carried by the printing machine. A plurality of adjustment mechanism are interposed between the mounting head and the retainer for screen printing frame for adjusting the retainer and the screen printing frame relative to the mounting head. At least one of the adjustment mechanisms has a sleeve having a threaded bore carried by either the retainer or the mounting head and a threaded shaft carried by the other. Rotating of the threaded shaft in the threaded bore adjust the position of the screen printing frame relative to the mounting head. The sleeve has a hole extending through the threaded bore and a pin adaptable for insertion in the hole for locating the end of the threaded shaft for use as a stop position for locating a zero position of the adjustment mechanism. The threaded shaft is adjustable positioned on the other of the retainer or the mounting head for adjusting the stop therein adjusting the zero position of the adjustment mechanism.

A process for producing high quality multi-color images on textured surfaces. A plurality of color separation negatives are produced from an original multi-color image. Printing plates are prepared using the color separation negatives and a stochastic random dot screen. The plates are mounted on a series of printing units and the separation images are printed in register using an ink that is cured to a substantially dry state by exposure to ultraviolet radiation. A source of ultraviolet radiation is placed between each pair of printing unite to cure each image before the next is printed. The images are printed on a textured substrate, such as canvas. Selected areas are then overprinted serigraphically using transparent to translucent liquids, at least some of which include translucent colorants. The imaged substrate may be coated with a liquid plastic which is textured as the plastic dries. The final product is a high quality, artistic, rendering of the original image.
