A flexographic printing press comprising a plurality of inking units and plate cylinders and at least one impression cylinder, which is driven by a coaxial central gear in mesh with the gears of the plate cylinders rotatably mounted on plate cylinder carriages, which are adapted to move toward and away from the impression cylinder on tracks provided in the machine frame. That printing press is characterized in that each plate cylinder gear has a projection or hub provided on its periphery with angularly spaced detent bores equal in number to the plate cylinders and disposed on respective axially spaced peripheral lines. The plate cylinder carriages have detent pins, which are axially or angularly movable and are disposed in respective radial planes and are offset relative to each other so that each pin is adapted to enter that detent bore of that plate cylinder, which has a detent bore at a corresponding axial location. The detent bore of each plate cylinder has such an angular position that when the plate cylinders have been located on the plate cylinder carriages by means of the detent bores and the detent pins and the central gear has been adjusted to the proper angular position, the plates on the plate cylinders will be adjusted for printing in perfect register when the plate cylinders are caused to mesh with the central gear.

Electrical control circuitry for driving a rotational print head to initiate an endorsement on a single side of paper checks traveling past the print head at a relatively constant velocity, including a bistable device operatively connected to control a ramp generator for accelerating the print head at a relatively constant rate from a stopped position to a present printing velocity and then decelerating the print head to a rest state at the same relatively constant rate after completion of document endorsement. The circuitry responds to closely-spaced documents entering the endorser by interrupting the head during its deceleration mode and maintaining the head at its interrupted velocity for a certain time delay in order to reaccelerate the head back to printing velocity at the same relatively constant rate in time for proper endorsement.

A device for adjusting the plate or blanket cylinders in a rotary printing press automatically moves the cylinders to predetermined positions for clamping or unclamping the plate or blanket. A memory stores predetermined set values for cylinder position, which are addressed by a triggering unit in response to operation selections. An angle coder senses the actual value of the cylinder position which is compared to the set values obtained from the memory to generate a control signal for adjusting a cylinder drive motor. In a preferred embodiment, the memory also stores the direction for rotating the cylinders as well as a number of cylinder movement steps for plate and blanket clamping and unclamping sequences.

A duplicating machine has an impression roll positioned to press copy sheets against a master sheet on a drum which is rotatable by an electric drive motor through a coil spring type clutch. The clutch consists of a coil spring having an interference fit with cylindrical friction surfaces on driving and driven clutch members which are connected respectively to the motor and drum. The coil spring is helically wound in a direction to tighten the interference fit when the motor rotates the driving clutch member to turn the drum in a printing direction; conversely, the interference fit loosens when the driving end of the coil spring is held, enabling the driving clutch member to rotate freely. A tang on the driving end of the spring is positively connected to a cylindrical release collar surrounding the spring. The driven end of the spring has a positive tang connection to the driven clutch member and drum. Thus, rotation of the release collar and drum are synchronized within a range determined by the torsional elasticity of the spring. A stop arm is movable to and from a stop position engaging one or more detent recesses in the release collar. Engagement of the stop arm within one of the recesses, at the end of a printing run, automatically stops the collar. This disengages the clutch by releasing the interference fit between the spring and the driving clutch member. The drum stops at a position determined by the stopped position of the release collar. A plurality of detent recesses are circumferentially and axially spaced about and along the axis of the release collar. The stop arm is selectively engageable with one or the other of the recesses to stop the drum at different rotated positions to enable the ends of different length master sheets to clear the impression roll. A manually operable starter arm assembly releases the stop arm from the detent recess on the release collar and simultaneously closes a switch to actuate the drive motor. Conversely, when the last copy sheet is fed into the machine, the stop arm automatically drops into the selected recess to stop the release collar to disengage the clutch while simultaneously opening the switch to deactuate the driving motor and allow the drive train to coast to a stop.
