A process for producing a polybutadiene is provided wherein, first, 1,3-butadiene is polymerized in the presence of a particular cis-1,4-polymerization catalyst and subsequently, the polymerization is continued in the presence of a particular 1,2-polymerization catalyst. The resulting polybutadiene is characterized as containing 2 to 40% of the 1,2-structure, the melting point of the 1,2-structure portion being 110.degree. to 215.degree.C, and containing 60 to 98% of the cis-1,4-structure and having an intrinsic viscosity [.eta.] of 0.9 to 8 in tetraline at 135.degree.C. A vulcanized product of the polybutadiene is characterized as possessing improved tear strength, flex-crack resistance and tensile strength.

Polymers of conjugated diene hydrocarbons and a method for their preparation which comprises (A) polymerizing the conjugated diene to form a polymer having substantially a trans-1,4 structure in the presence of a catalyst prepared by mixing a vanadium compound selected from vanadium trichloride and the product of vanadium tetrachloride and titanium tetrachloride with at least one organo aluminum compound and with up to 3 moles of a titanium compound per mole of vanadium compound where the titanium compound is selected from the group consisting of titanium triacetylacetonate and the compounds having the formula Ti(OR'')4 and (B) mixing oxygen with the polymerized diene hydrocarbon and catalyst to reduce the molecular weight of the polymer.

Novel alternating copolymers of conjugated dienes and conjugated polar vinyl monomers, wherein the conjugated diene unit is connected in a trans-1,4 form and the conjugated polar vinyl monomer unit and the conjugated diene unit are bonded alternately, are produced efficiently by copolyermizing these monomers in a non-aqueous medium at rather low temperature by using a catalyst system prepared by admixing a selected transition metal compound and an organoaluminum halide in the presence of the polar vinyl monomer or another selected Lewis base. The alternating copolymer here obtained has a regular structure, on this account, for example, the butadiene/acrylonitrile elastic alternating copolymer can be oriented and crystallized under a highly stretched condition.
