An ink for ink-jet recording is provided, in which an amount of water X (% by weight) in the ink and a saturation viscosity Y satisfy Ynull4.5e0.09X. The saturation viscosity Y is a viscosity (mPanulls) obtained when an ink residual liquid, which is obtained by evaporating volatile components of the ink until a change in weight of the ink is less than 0.05 g/day per 50 g of ink under a condition of a temperature of 60null C. and a humidity of 40%, is cooled to a temperature of 25null C. in an environment of a humidity of 40%. X satisfies 50nullXnull75. The ink exhibits satisfactory jetting stability when the ink is normally used. Further, the ink is easily restored to give a normal jetting state even after undergoing an abnormal condition, for example, when the ink is left to stand without any nozzle cap.

The methods of forming a chemically adsorbed film by contacting a substrate with a solution mixture containing an alkoxysilane surface active agent, a non-aqueous solvent and a silanol-condensing catalyst to form a film covalently bonded to the substrate via siloxane bonds. These methods do not generate hydrochloric acid gas in forming the films and allow practical reaction rates.

Ink sets that are particularly suitable for inkjet printing over a large range of uncoated papers, have reduced bleed between color and black inks, and include black and color inks that are mutually compatible in pens. The ink sets include at least one pigment-based black ink having cationic and anionic dispersant groups, and at least one color dye or pigment that interacts with the black ink when printed on a receiving medium. The black pigment is self-dispersed and is dual treated with cationic and anionic dispersant groups. When printed onto an alkaline medium, the black pigment will carry a net negative charge that will interact with the positively charged color dyes and/or pigments and, thus, be bleed arrested. When printed onto an acidic medium, the black pigment will have a positive charge, will interact with the negatively charged color dyes and/or pigments, and thus be bleed arrested.

An aqueous film forming inorganic composition which is prepared by reacting metallic silicon and an alkali metal hydroxide in an aqueous solvent in the presence of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of a fluoride and sulfurous acid, nitrous acid, phosphorous acid and a salt of the acid, characterized in that it has a pH value of 10 to 13 at 20null C. and comprises colloidal particles of the product of the above reaction having various, that is, relatively large, medium and relatively small particle diameters; an inorganic foam prepared by heating the composition to 150null C. or higher; and methods for preparing the composition and the foam. The aqueous film forming inorganic composition can be suitably used for preparing an inorganic foam and a thermally insulating composite material which are excellent in thermal insulation, and is not pollutant to the environment and can be recycled in the environment.

A modified alkali silicate composition for forming an inorganic network matrix. The modified alkali silicate matrix is made by reacting an alkali silicate (or its precursors such as an alkali hydroxide, a SiO2 source and water), an acidic inorganic composition, such as a reactive glass, water and optional fillers, additives and processing aids. An inorganic matrix composite can be prepared by applying a slurry of the modified aqueous alkali silicate composition to a reinforcing medium and applying the temperature and pressure necessary to consolidate the desired form. The composite can be shaped by compression molding as well as other known fabrication methods. A notable aspect of the invention is that, although composite and neat resin components prepared from the invention can exhibit excellent dimensional stability to 1000null C. and higher, they can be prepared at the lower temperatures and pressures typical to organic polymer processing.
