摘要: The present invention provides a high-sensitive, inexpensive biochip reader for reading a biochip as compared to a fluorescence method. The biochip reader is provided with an X-Y stage (3) for mounting a biochip (6) and scanning the biochip (6) in a two-dimensional manner, a controller (4) for the X-Y stage, a magnetic sensor (1) for reading the magnetic field strength, an ohmmeter (2), and a computer (5) for signal processing. As a result, a high-performance, inexpensive biochip reader can be provided without using an expensive laser or an expensive optical system, by employing a magnetic sensor and a disk driving mechanism generally used in a hard disk drive and the like.

摘要: A microplate is described that has a surface with an enhanced lubricious property which makes it easier to remove the microplate from a thermocycler. Basically, the microplate has a frame which includes an array of wells formed therein that are made from a thermoplastic material (e.g. polypropylene) mixed with a non-toxic surface active material (e.g., surfactant, stearyl alcohol). The non-toxic surface active material functions to enhance the lubricity of the surface of the microplate which makes it easier to remove the microplate from the thermocycler. In addition, the non-toxic surface active material within the microplate also makes it easier to remove a newly molded microplate from a mold cavity in an injection molding machine. Also described herein are details about methods for making and using such microplates.

摘要: The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for producing cell population of the same chronological age. Cells of a predetermined age are collected onto an array of surfaces. The collected cells are retained on the said surface during their continuous cultivation and kept from mixing with their descendants by means of flushing away their offspring. Sampling of surface from the array at desired time gives cell populations of desired cell age for examination, assay and other different uses.

摘要: An open, continuous system for culturing Chaetoceros sp. microalgae includes a large outdoor container and full strength sunlight as a light source. The container is preferably a fiberglass tank having an open top, a diameter of approximately 18 inches, and a height of about 5 feet. The container holds a culture medium having the following characteristics: a carbon dioxide controlled pH of about 8.2, a starting nitrogen concentration of at least 3.0 mg N/liter, a starting phosphorous concentration of at least 2.75 mg P/liter, a starting vitamin B12 concentration of at least 5 micrograms/liter, a starting iron chloride concentration of at least 0.3 mg/liter, a starting copper sulfate concentration of at least 0.01 mg/liter, a starting silicate concentration of at least 10 mg SiO2/liter, and a Na2EDTA concentration of 5 mg/liter. The medium is inoculated with a seed stock of Chaetoceros sp. microalgae and exposed direct sunlight. A portion of the cultured microalgae, preferably in the 90% range, is harvested each day and replaced with new culture media. As sterile conditions are not required, seawater may be used as the replacing culture media.

摘要: Initially, putrescent waste is deposited on a surface of a disposal volume which is partially composed of putrescent waste. A living system bio-converts at least a portion of the putrescent waste in the disposal volume, transforming the putrescent waste into waste residue. While bio-conversion is occurring on a portion of the putrescent waste in the disposal volume, waste residue is excavated from the disposal volume below the surface of the disposal volume. Because the excavation takes place below the surface area, the bio-conversion process is not affected by excavating the waste residue. A device for continuous bio-conversion of putrescent waste comprises a disposal track having lateral side walls and floor for containing the disposal volume. An excavation gap is associated with at least one of the lateral side walls for excavating waste material from the disposal volume. The excavation gap is positioned substantially below the living system so waste can be excavated simultaneously with bio-conversion. The device further employs a scraper for excavating at least a portion of the waste residue. The scraper has a plurality of blades attached to a chain for excavating the waste and interposed between the blades are backplates which clean the blades as the chain rounds a sprocket. The scraper is moved along the floor of the disposal track as it excavates the waste material. The floor both supports the disposal volume and the scraper, and has a filter screen to filter water from the disposal volume.

摘要: A cell tube for ex vivo culturing animal cells and a multiple roller tube cell culture system are disclosed. Suitable for use in culturing cells, the tube has at its opposite end walls two openings through which culture media can come in and out. The openings are eccentrically located at corresponding positions in contact with the edge sides of the end walls. The system has a plurality of roller drums on which a multitude of cell tubes are assembled. As the roller drums are rotated, cells adhering to each tube experience a nutrient-rich state and aerobic starvation, repeatedly. In the nutrient-rich state, the cells are grown flourishingly. When subjected to starvation, cells select metabolism pathways for utilizing carbon sources effectively, produce lactate at a low rate and can maintain a constant pH, because they are in direct contact with air. The system makes cells adhere to the wall of cell tubes and provides air directly to cell surfaces. Adherent cells can be grown with normal morphology at high yield for a long time in the cell culture system. The cell culture can be easily scaled up simply by increasing the number of the roller drums. The system can exchange media and feed a gas mixture of oxygen and carbon dioxide easily, thus providing optimal environments suitable for small to large scale cell culture.

摘要: A plant propagation apparatus is disclosed which comprises a flexible transparent enclosure. The enclosure is disposable, and could be formed of a polymer such as polyethylene. The enclosure would have at least two walls, formed of flexible material that facilitates transmission of light through the walls. Plant material is sealed within the enclosure, and nutrient solution is made available within the sealed enclosure for the plant. The enclosure is a low cost and effective method for propagating young plants and transporting them between the laboratory environment and a greenhouse or field. The enclosure may be configured to receive gas or carbon dioxide on its inner surface to a predetermined level of pressure, thereby affording the enclosure a flexible but stiff mechanical resistance that protects the young plant while it is growing.

摘要: A system and apparatus for growing plants is disclosed. The system includes a first thermal panel with multiple flow channels, the thermal panel being located between a growing space and a light source. A cooling fluid is circulated in a countercurrent flow pattern (i.e. in at least two different directions). The channels may be connected to one or more headers, which serve as a fluid manifold to deliver fluid and collect fluid from the flow channels. Growing closely spaced plants from seed or cuttings to transplants for the field or a greenhouse is one application of this system.
