Compositions suitable for use as hot-melt textile warp sizes are prepared by blending copolymers of ethylene and acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and the like, with selected low-molecular-weight additives, such as low-molecular-weight ethylene/acrylic acid copolymers, ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymers, and/or dicarboxylic acids, monoglycerides and waxes. These blends have low melt viscosities, can be readily applied to textile yarns with conventional hot-melt application equipment and set up rapidly to nontacky protective coatings on the yarns. After processing of the yarns, the new hot-melt sizes are readily removable using conventional securing procedures.

A composition for applying a non-permanent soil-release finish to fabrics from dilute solution comprising a polycarboxylate polymer having an acid equivalent weight of from about 110 to 175, and a water-soluble salt of a polyvalent metal. A preferred polymer is derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid and an alkyl acrylate. The composition is particularly useful for applying a soil-release finish in the rinse cycle of a home laundry process.

A fibrous material consisting of cellulosic or other natural fiber, synthetic fibers, or blends of various fibers is treated with an aqueous reagent system having a pH above 3.6 that is comprised of one or more carboxyl-containing vinyl monomers, a free-radical initiator, and a suitable base to adjust the pH. Comonomers and water-soluble di- or polyfunctional vinyl monomers may be included. Polymerization is conducted at elevated temperature in an atmosphere in which air may be diluted by steam and/or steam-nitrogen. The polymer is durably fixed to the fibrous substrate and contributes various special performance properties thereto.
