Disclosed are improved methods and apparatus for improving the production of hydrocarbons from wells having gravel pack in a production zone. The methods and apparatus basically comprise the steps of entering a gravel packed well and perforating the gravel pack screen and fracture packing the formation through the screen perforations. At least the last portion of the particulate is preferably coated with a consolidator that will form a proppant pack. Installing a second screen in the well to overlap the perforations in the gravel pack screen to prevent the particulate from reentering the well.

For a given set of fixed parameters, such as the wellbore size, screen size and formation fracture pressure, the method provides a combination of critical parameter values, including the proppant density, the mixture ratio of proppant and liquid and the pump rate which will yield an efficient and effective placement of the proppant in the annulus.

A flow-control service assembly is disposed within the screen assembly and includes an outer tubular member and an inner tubular member. The outer tubular member includes a plurality of ports that communicate with the apertures in the screen assembly. Barriers are placed around the ports on the outer tubular member to prevent the formation of gravel bridges across the inner annulus between the inner tubular member and outer tubular member. The inner annulus provides alternative flow paths around the ports upon the ports becoming closed to fluid flow such as by bridges.

The well tool is comprised of a screen and at least one alternate flowpath which is initially closed to flow by a valve means. Once a sand bridge is formed in the completion interval, the pressure of the pumped slurry increases which, in turn, opens the valve means to allow flow through the alternate flowpath. Preferably, a plurality of flowpaths of different lengths are provided, all of which include valve means which are adapted to open at different pressures.

The system further includes a set of job parameters pertaining to the treatment and qualitative ratings of said parameters estimating their relevance in the effective success of a treatment. An interface allows the user to enter the job parameters values known to him. Built in rules, associated with calculating means including an integrated spreadsheet, match fluid characteristics and job parameters and trigger the elimination of fluids that are not compatible with some value of the job parameters and compute a confidence index for the non-eliminated fluid families, said confidence index based on the one the sum of the products of the fluid families digital ratings and on the rating of the known job parameter. The system also includes means to display the results.
