A pilot burner has a saddle whereby it is attached to a flare pipe. The top of the pilot burner is at the flame end of the flare pipe so that a torch or flame from the pilot burner will ignite any waste gas being flared. The pilot burner is of tubular construction and includes a combustion chamber. The combustion chamber has a drain in the lower portion so that any fluids within the tubular pilot burner may be drained from it without impeding the flow of gas/air mixture entering the combustion chamber. A spark from a plug in the combustion chamber ignites the pilot flame. The electrical connector to the spark plug is in the form of 1/4" diameter stainless steal rod which is supported by ceramic insulators to avoid the electrical system being damaged by fire.

A large capacity air-powered flare for smokeless combustion of very large volumes of vented waste gases, comprises a first inner vertical conduit of diameter D1, for the flow of waste gas, and a second larger coaxial conduit of diameter D2, for the flow of primary combustion air, at a selected velocity in the annular space therebetween. Above the top the inner conduit there is a cylindrical obstruction of diameter D3 which is greater than D1, but less than D2. This forces the upwardly flowing gases to be deflected outwardly and upwardly into the second annular space between the obstruction and the outer conduit. The velocity of primary combustion air in the second annular space is at least 50 f.p.s., which serves to thoroughly mix with the inflowing gases so that as they rise through the second annular space they continue flowing above the top of the flare as an annular wall of high velocity gas, air and flame. This high velocity annular flow has large surface area on the outside and inside. Because of the high velocity of flow, secondary air is induced into the outside wall of this column, and also axially downwardly into the interior of this flow, where it moves radially outwardly to intersect the flowing gas and provide additional combustion air.

A waste gas flare igniter includes a pair of ignition tubes, each having a fuel line and an electrode extending therethrough to points near the ends of the tubes. The tubes are connected to an air distribution box which is slidably mounted on linear guides. A jackscrew and motor translate the air box and tubes between an extended position wherein the tubes connect with inwardly directed extensions passing through a heat shield at the end of the flare pipe for ignition of the waste gas and a retracted position spacing the tubes from the heat shield. The air box is connected by a telescoping duct to a blower, and the fuel line to a valve and pump to provide a fuel-air mixture which is ignited when the tubes are extended to ignite the waste gas.

A waste gas incinerator for burning waste gases is disclosed. The incinerator ensures substantially complete combustion of toxic and odoriferous compounds under high wind conditions, erratic flow rates and low ambient temperatures. The incinerator comprises an upright refractory liner generally cylindrical casing forming a heat sink, and has an open upper end and a lower end. An upper wind shroud is provided adjacent the open upper end and a lower wind shroud adjacent the lower end, both wind shrouds have a generally cylindrical shape with a larger diameter than the casing and a plurality of openings spaced around the wind shrouds. Air access is provided at the lower end of the casing, the access having a restrictor to limit air entry and cause turbulent air flow in the casing, and a waste gas entry to the casing.

An igniter for a flare stack for waste gases is actuated periodically by an intermittently firing spark plug. A fuel gas for ignition aspirates combustion air through openings in a housing enclosing a supply line for the fuel gas. Flashback from the intermittent ignition of the fuel gas is prevented and noise is reduced by closure means responsive to the pressure differential between the interior of the housing and the ambient air. The closure means close the openings when the pressure within the housing is higher than the pressure of the ambient air.

An improved low pollution invisible flare burner comprises a tall stack lined with ceramic. The stack is supported above the ground level and has a wind screen surrounding the open portion below the stack floor. Primary air is introduced under pressure in a tube below and coaxial with the stack. The top of the tube contains a burner for the vented hydrocarbon gases. The top of the tube and the burner are at the level of the floor of the stack. Secondary air is introduced into the stack in the annular space between the primary air conduit and an opening in the floor of the stack. Turbulent mixing of the primary air and the vent gas, plus the availability of sufficient atmospheric air for complete combustion, plus the effect of heated ceramic in the vicinity of the flame, provide means for complete combustion of the vented gases with low emission of smoke and light.
