A flue terminal extractor mounted at the discharge end of a flue comprises a lower unit mounted coaxially on the flue and an upper unit coaxial with and spaced from the lower unit. The lower unit comprises a downwardly facing frustoconical lower base having a central opening through which the flue extends and an upwardly facing frustoconical lower bonnet joined at its outer periphery with the outer periphery of the lower base and having a central opening in which the flue terminates. The upper unit comprises a downwardly facing conical upper base and an upwardly facing conical upper bonnet. The area of the free space for outward flow of gas between the lower unit and the upper unit is at least equal to the cross sectional area of the flue.

The device is constructed from first and second cap members made in the form of open-bottomed cones which are substantially broader at their bases than they are high. The cones are joined together at their edges with their axes aligned. The lower cone has a large stack inlet opening at its apex which is connected to a stack. The lower cone also includes a plurality of outlet openings around its periphery. The area of the outlet openings exceeds the cross-sectional area of the stack.

An outlet opening of the exhaust tube terminates in the exhaust layer. An intake layer is separated from the exhaust layer. The intake layer has an enclosure defining a positive pressure area within the enclosure and a plurality of openings. Each of openings has a cross-sectional area that decreases from an exterior surface of the enclosure toward the positive pressure area within the enclosure. An intake tube is adapted to receive intake air at an inlet opening positioned in the positive pressure area. The positive pressure area in the intake layer has a pressure greater than the atmospheric pressure outside the termination and in the exhaust layer to prevent flow in the exhaust tube from being reversed.

A direct vent fireplace has a mounting assembly for aiding in the installation of a vent cap assembly through which fresh air is drawn for combustion and exhaust gas products are expelled from the fireplace. The assembly includes a wall mounting box having a plate which may be secured to a pair of spaced apart framing studs of an interior wall adjacent to which the fireplace is to be installed. The wall box includes two members which are telescopically connected together so that the length from the plate to rear surface of the box may be adjustably selected to be equal to the thickness of an exterior wall through which the air enters and the flue gases exhaust. The vent cap assembly includes a plate which is secured to the rear end of the box after the box has been installed. Adjustable length flue gas and air tubes are received through the box and connect the event cap assembly to the fireplace.
