The auger that moves the birds has a segmented auger blade (23) formed with a series of blade segments (24) which overlap one another along the auger shaft (22) and define water passages (26) therebetween. The water passages permit movement of chilled water through the tank, and the offset edges of adjacent auger blade segments, together with the water movement, causes a tumbling and reorientation of the birds as they are chilled and conveyed through the tank.

The coolant insert fits within the container such that it rests on the top edge of the insulation liner sidewalls, and it holds a coolant, e.g., carbon dioxide snow. The insert has a perforated bottom wall and an insulated top wall. When the tote holds frozen goods, the perforated bottom wall is opposite the interior of the container. When the tote holds refrigerated goods, the insulated top wall is opposite the interior of the container.

A heat switch includes two symmetric jaws. Each jaw is comprised of a link connected at a translatable joint to a flexible arm. Each arm rotates about a fixed pivot, and has an articulated end including a thermal contact pad connected to a heat sink. The links are joined together at a translatable main joint. To close the heat switch, a closing solenoid is actuated and forces the main joint to an over-center position. This movement rotates the arms about their pivots, respectively, forces each of them into a stressed configuration, and forces the thermal contact pads towards each other and into compressive contact with a cold finger. The closing solenoid is then deactivated. The heat switch remains closed due to a restoring force generated by the stressed configuration of each arm, until actuation of an opening solenoid returns the main joint to its starting open-switch position.
