Methods for operating a laser scanning system are disclosed. The laser scanning system can be used in construction projects to generate a field survey. An architect or engineer can use the field survey to create construction drawings. In addition, relevant points from the construction drawings can be identified at the construction site with the scanning system. Further, earth moving equipment can be controlled using the same information. The laser scanning system can also be used to determine if two parts can be mated together by scanning and comparing the parts that are to be mated. The laser scanning system can further be used to determine if an object can be moved through an opening in a structure by comparing scan points of the structure with scan points from the object. The laser scanning system can additionally be used to identifying objects within the site, to build databases that have relevant information about the objects, and to guide reproducing machines.

Techniques are disclosed for providing a system that has a plurality of devices in which the position of a device of the plurality of devices relative to another device of the plurality of devices is self-calibrated. In one embodiment, the system is a five-camera aligner for use in aligning motor vehicle wheels. In this embodiment, the aligner includes a first camera pod having two alignment cameras and a calibration camera, and a second camera pod having another two alignment cameras and a calibration target. Because the aligner has four alignment cameras and a calibration camera, the aligner is often referred to as a five-camera aligner. For illustration purposes, the first camera pod is herein referred to as the left camera pod and the second camera pod is herein referred to as the right camera pod. In one embodiment, the left camera pod is placed to the left of the aligner, and the right camera pod is placed to the right of the aligner. The two alignment cameras of the left camera pod focus at the two left wheels of the vehicle under alignment, while the two alignment cameras of the right camera pod focus at the two right wheels of the same vehicle. In addition, the calibration camera on the left pod focuses at the calibration target mounted in the right camera pod. In one embodiment, the relative positions of the elements (alignment camera, calibration camera, and calibration target) in each camera pod are pre-calibrated. Consequently, the aligner is fully calibrated when the position of the left camera pod to the right camera pod is measured. Further, the calibration camera is configured such that it periodically measures the position of the left camera pod relative to the right camera pod, rendering the aligner a self-calibrated aligner.

A missile tracking and deflection system for protecting a platform includes a missile warning system for detecting the presence of a missile and generating a warning signal. A countermeasure processor receives the warning signal and analyzes characteristics of the missile to prioritize a trajectory signal. A track processor receives the trajectory signal and generates a pointer signal. The system also includes a receiver, which is positioned by a pointer that receives the pointer signal, for receiving a passive and/or active signature of the missile to confirm the presence thereof. The countermeasure processor then directs a laser beam at the missile to determine its operational parameters and receives an active signature from the missile. The receiver delivers the passive and/or active signatures to the countermeasure processor and the track processor, wherein the track processor updates the pointer signal and the countermeasure processor generates a jam code delivered by the laser beam to divert the trajectory of the missile away from the platform. A nulling or blanking signal may be used during generation of the laser beam to improve reception of the active signature.

To detect the relative position of bodies, surfaces or the like, especially those on machines, there is an optoelectronic sensor. The latter reacts to incident light, for example, monochromatic laser light. The available receiving surface is however comparatively small for low-cost or pixel-oriented sensors. By making available a diffuser and a projecting objective lens in front of an optoelectronic sensor the usable receiving surface for incident light can be greatly increased. The diffuser or also the projecting objective lens can additionally be designed as a color filter and can be used to reduce the effects of outside light. A process is provided with which an especially accurate determination of the median point of the laser light spot incident on the target (optoelectronic sensor) can be achieved.
