A method and an apparatus are provided for measuring the amount of entrained gases in a liquid sample. A conduit defining a volume is provided. The conduit has an inlet at a lower end thereof and an outlet at an upper end thereof. Liquid sample is made to flow into the inlet, through the conduit, and out of the outlet. The weight of the liquid sample in the conduit is determined during a flow of liquid sample through the conduit to obtain a first measurement. Thereafter, a difference between the first measurement and a predetermined weight value representing a weight of the same liquid sample flowing through the conduit but containing no entrained gases is determined to obtain a calculated weight of entrained gases in the liquid sample flowing through the conduit.

In a method of monitoring the state of a felt serving for the dewatering of a fiber web, in particular of a paper web or of a cardboard web, the felt topography is measured and/or an image of the felt surface having definition in depth is produced by mean of an optical measuring device and the result of the measurement obtained is compared with previously stored error patterns by means of an evaluation and/or control unit. Corresponding felt conditioning measures are then initiated, preferably automatically, in dependence on the result of the comparison. A corresponding felt monitoring device is also described. In a further method of monitoring the state of a felt or screen serving the dewatering of a fiber web, in particular of a paper web or a cardboard web, specific felt and/or screen properties are determined permanently or cyclically at intervals and are filed under a pre-settable felt and/or screen name in a historical database. By means of an evaluation and/or control unit, the relevant data are graphically recorded, in particular relative to the time of the felt and/or screen change, the obtained property development over time is compared with a felt and/or screen property development already previously determined or recorded and a signaling is initiated and/or at least one counter measure is automatically triggered if the obtained property development over time differs from the felt and/or screen property development over time already previously determined or recorded by a pre-settable measure or lies outside a pre-settable range. The present invention relates to a method for producing and testing a fiber bed (39), includes a housing (12), a main inlet passage (14) and a main outlet passage (16), a cavity (18) in said housing in fluid connection with said inlet and outlet passages, a body (20) rotatably arranged in said cavity, said body being arranged with a through-going passage (24) having a first and a second opening, a screen (25) arranged in said through-going passage, and means (40) for measuring properties of the fiber bed. The method is characterised in positioning said body so that the first opening is connected to the main inlet and the second opening is connected to the main outlet, creating a first passage, leading a fiber suspension through the first passage in order to produce a fiber bed on the screen, measuring the properties of the bed, rotating said body such that the second opening is connected to the main inlet and the first opening is connected to the main outlet and creating a flow through the first passage for removing said fiber bed from the screen through the outlet. The present invention also relates to a device for performing the method of the invention.

A method of selecting bulk wood units for mechanical pulping, which consists of establishing a reference scale by selecting a test sample measuring the acoustic velocity through each sample unit, selecting acoustic velocity band from the sample results, processing the sample units using known mechanical pulping processes, testing the resulting pulp to measure the freeness of the pulp, and then graphing the pulping energy measurements against the pulp freeness measurements for each of the velocity bands to produce a reference scale; measuring the acoustic velocity through each of the units, comparing the velocity measurement for each unit against the reference scale, and then dividing the tested units into subgroups according to the predicted mechanical pulping energy.

The invention relates to a method and a device for measuring concentrations especially in a pulp suspension, from which a sample (3) has been taken. The sample (3) is collected in a measuring vessel (2), in which a piston (6) is guided upwards and downwards in order to press the sample (3) from each direction through a measuring sensor (5) connected at the side of the measuring vessel via communicating tubes (4,4null) connected in an upper and an lower position to the measurement vessel (2), whereby the sample (3) is stirred totally for eliminating of a flocculation in the same, whereupon a measurement of the concentration of the sample (3) is made either during the movement upwards or downwards of the piston (6) in the measuring vessel (2) and first when the speed of the sample (3) through the measuring sensor (5) is constant and the sample has been homogenized at least after some movement upwards and downwards of the piston. The device consists of a sample treatment unit (1), in which communicating tubes (4,4null) connect the upper (10) and lower (10null) portion of a measuring sensor (5), in said measuring vessel a piston (6) is guidable upwards and downwards to press the sample (3) through the measuring sensor (5) from each direction and said diameter of said piston (6) mainly corresponds to the inner contour of the measuring vessel (2), the flow rate of the sample being controllable via the speed of the piston and the measurement of the concentration of the sample is practicable both during the movement upwards and downwards of the piston (6).

Novel methods for measuring the soothing attributes of personal care compositions are disclosed. The methods disclosed are particularly suitable for measuring and comparing the soothing attributes of facial tissue to determine which facial tissue is most soothing to damaged skin. The methods include damaging the skin of a test subject to a predetermined amount, contacting a test facial tissue with the damaged skin, and rating the soothing attributes of the facial tissue. In a preferred embodiment, the amount of skin damage on the skin is determined by the test subject.
