    摘要: An ultrasonic transmitter generates a reference signal based on a clock signal of a specific frequency and a control signal made up of binary values 0 and 1 for controlling how the level (High or Low) of a carrier drive signal should change, and generates an analog signal constituting the carrier drive signal by pulse-duration-modulating the reference signal. Produced from the carrier drive signal, a driving pulse signal is shaped into a curved waveform having a gradually rising leading edge and a gradually falling trailing edge as the amplitude of the carrier drive signal is gradually increased and decreased based on the control signal.

    摘要: An acoustic method for measuring of a distance between an emitter of acoustic energy and a target object provides for an accurate measurement by having the measurement's outcome invariant to the speed of sound variations along the acoustical path between the emitter and the target. A plurality of emitters and a plurality of receivers are used in the invention. One acoustic emitter and one receiver are located in a spatial region such that the sent and the reflected acoustical energy passes along substantially same vertical line between the emitter and the target. Another acoustic emitter sends the acoustical energy at an angled direction to the same area on the target's reflecting surface as the first emitter does. The corresponding echo travels to another receiver. During the measurement, two specific variables are being monitored. The first variable is associated with the distance between the first emitter and the target. The second variable is associated with the distance that the acoustic energy travels from the second emitter to the target to the second receiver. Both monitored variables are affected by the possible variations of the speed of sound. The sought distance between the first emitter and the target's reflecting area is calculated by a function of the ratio between the monitored variables, whereby, possible variations of the speed of sound to the result of the distance measurement are irrelevant.

    摘要: A sonar array for forming multiple transmit and/or receive acoustic beams by a frequency beamforming technique. In frequency division beamforming, beam steering direction is made a function of frequency by driving (receiving) each element of a uniformly spaced line array by a signal which leads or lags its nearest neighbor by a fixed phase shift, nullnull. This permits scanning a transmit and/or receive beam through a range of angles by changing its frequency. The same principle can be used to form multiple simultaneous transmit and/or receive beams. This is accomplished by transmitting a wide bandwidth signal and receiving the echoes through a spectrum analyzer. Each frequency bin of the spectrum analyzer then corresponds to a beam pointing in its own unique direction. Advantages of such a sonar system include improved cost, weight, and size versus performance for a variety of systems including ahead looking sonars and bottom mapping sonars.

The invention provides an apparatus for material classification and substance identification of an object contained within an enclosure, or buried beneath the ground. In addition, the present invention discloses the use of energy pulses of differing frequencies, such that the signal processor can compute the rate of change of energy absorption of the substance, as a function of frequency (dnull/df). In this way, the apparatus permits the formulation of a highly detailed and accurate object signature, which can be compared with a database of known object signatures for exact substance identification.
