    摘要: An optical system with mechanical adjustment provides for the rotation and/or translation of one or more optical phase filters to variably select an extended depth of field, aberration-tolerance, and/or anti-aliasing properties of an optical imaging system. By adjusting the amount of phase induced on the wavefront, a user may select image quality selectively. The system may further automatically counter change of focus and/or aperture to maintain substantially constant image properties. Typically, two phase filters are used and moved concurrently to achieve desired image properties.

A terahertz light detection unit 13 outputs an electrical signal corresponding to the intensity level of the electric field of the terahertz light entering the terahertz light detection unit. The polarity of the electric field of the terahertz light is modulated by inverting the polarity of the bias voltage applied between the pair of electrically conductive films. By using a reference signal synchronous with the polarity inversion of the bias voltage applied between the pair of electrically conductive films, the electrical signal provided by the terahertz light detection unit 13 is amplified at a lock-in amplifier 24.

    摘要: Disclosed is a directly modulated distributed feedback laser diode optical transmitter using a vestigial side band modulation. The optical transmitter comprises an electric signal generator converting inputted signals into electric signals; a distributed feedback laser diode converting the electric signals into optical signals; and an optical tunable filter for setting a central wavelength configured to filter the optical signals using a central wavelength, perform a vestigial side band modulation of the optical signals by degenerating a determined band of the optical signals using central wavelength, and reduce the band width of the optical fibers, thereby improving the extinction ratio. By applying an optical tunable filter of a vestigial side band modulation type to an optical transmitter using a directly modulated distributed feedback laser diode, the band width of optical signals for a transmission can be reduced.

With this arrangement, based on the use of the LiNbO3 crystal or the LiTaO3 crystal that can be manufactured by a large quantity at low cost, it is possible to obtain polarization characteristics and wavelength discrimination characteristics that are stable against environmental changes such as temperature and external stress, by suppressing the pyroelectric effect and the piezoelectric effect of these materials.

    摘要: An exemplary monolithic stabilized monolithic transmissive active optical device, such as an electroabsorption modulator (EAM), a variable optical attenuator (VOA), or a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), with an output optical tap, is formed from: a substrate; a waveguide layer; a semiconductor layer. The waveguide layer is coupled to the substrate and includes an active medium, which interacts with a predetermined wavelength of light, and is responsive to an electric signal. The electric signal is applied between the substrate and the semiconductor layer. The waveguide layer includes an output optical tap section and an active section adjacent to the output optical tap section. These sections include portions of the active medium. Further embodiments of the present invention incorporate temperature as well as bias control to improve performance of exemplary monolithic transmissive active optical devices.

    摘要: An automatic polarization controller is described that includes an optical input that receives a polarization multiplexed optical pulse train that comprises a first and a second polarized optical pulse train. A dither modulation signal is superimposed on at least one of the first and the second polarized optical pulse trains. A polarization transformer transforms an input polarization state of the polarization multiplexed optical pulse train to an output polarization state in response to a control signal that is applied to a control input of the polarization transformer. A polarization selective element receives the transformed polarization multiplexed optical pulse train and passes a polarized optical pulse train including the dither modulation signal. A detector receives the polarized optical pulse train including the superimposed dither modulation signal and generates a signal that is proportional to the amplitude of the dither modulation signal. A feedback control unit receives the signal generated by the detector and generates a control signal that is coupled to the control input of the polarization transformer. The polarization transformer adjusts the polarization state of the polarized optical pulse train in response to the control signal.
