A system of digital measurement of the position of a first member slidably mounted upon a second rotating member comprises a first stationary coupling coil and a second similar coupling coil mounted upon the second member coaxially with the rotary axis thereof and parallel to said first coil. Energy produced by a stationary high frequency power generator is fed to said first coil and transmitted inductively to the second coil from which it is derived and rectified, to provide d.c. power upon the rotating member for the energization of a pulse former producing digital position signals proportional to the movement of said first member and of a high-frequency signal generator modulated by said position signals. The output energy of the signal generator is transmitted inductively via said coils in a direction opposite to the transmitting direction of the power energy and the signal energy derived from the first coupling coil demodulated, to retrieve the original position signals for application to a translating device. In order to effect full decoupling between the power and signalling circuits, the power energy is transmitted in symmetrically balanced relation and the signal energy is transmitted in unbalanced relation to the center points of the coils as potential reference.

An analog-to-digital converter is disclosed which reads the positions of one or more coaxial shafts in terms of time intervals which occur between an interception of a beam of light and the end of a sequence of pulses coming from a spinning magnetized disk. These intervals are measured by pulse counters. If two shafts are being encoded, each disk revolution establishes positional communication with one light beam and two magnetic reading heads.

A position measurement system is disclosed including an improved pulse-width modulator in which positive and negative modulation counters respectively provide first and second modulator pulses having a time displacement therebetween proportional to a displacement between relatively movable members of a transducer. The modulation counters can be loaded to store signals representative of a cumulative number of least changes of the displacement, and clock pulses are provided to the modulation counters whereby the modulator output pulses are generated. The time displacement between the output pulses is changed in proportion to the cumulative number of the least changes stored by the counters. This arrangement permits the modulator counters to be modified in a predetermined fashion so that the least indicated change can represent alternatively a quantity in one of a plurality of measurement systems, e.g. in inch or metric units. In making this conversion, however, the delay in which data changes are recognizable in the output is not thereby increased and the effective information rate of the system is maintained.

A decimal to binary encoder for generating both decimal point position and round-off information for instructing calculator memory register or printout logic. The encoder includes two sets of permanent magnets and associated reed switches, each switch having a binary value. An individual coded shunt plate containing variously shaped apertures is interposed between each set of magnets and its switches for permitting patterns of magnetic fields through the plate, thereby closing different combinations of switches depending on the position of each plate with respect to its set of magnets and switches. The positioning of the decimal point location shunt plate also positions the round-off shunt plate so that round-off is always made with respect to the decimal point location. The round-off setting is effected by positioning the round-off set of magnets and switches in relation to the previously positioned round-off shunt plate.
