A securing structure is formed on an inside surface of the circumferential wall and corresponds to each of the openings between the support and the cylinder of the retainer. Each securing structure includes two spaced first ribs received in the opening and engaging corresponding legs of the support of the retainer and a second rib for engaging the projection of the retainer to secure the retainer in the socket. Channels are defined in the circumferential wall in the lower space for receivingly engaging the side faces of the partition of the retainer. A conductive pad is mounted to each wire and is located in a chamber formed between the securing structures and the circumferential wall of the socket for engaging the terminals of the bulb.

The lamp has a light-emitting vessel 16 of quartz and having end portions, an electrode member 10 contained in the vessel 16, and a conductive sealing member 7A. The sealing member 7A is fixed in the end portion and connected to the electrode member 10. The conductive member is composed of a sintered body made from silica granules each having a coating of a metal or a metal compound. The sintered body has a conductive network structure made of the metal and having a content of the metal of not higher than 20 volume percent.

A method of producing a ceramic metal halide discharge lamp having a monolithic seal between a sapphire (single crystal alumina) arc tube and a polycrystalline alumina (PCA) end cap. The method includes the steps of providing an arc tube of fully dense sapphire and providing an end cap made of unsintered compressed polycrystalline alumina powder doped with magnesium oxide and yttrium oxide. The end cap is heated until it is presintered to remove organic binder material at a low temperature relative to the sintering temperature. The presintered end cap is placed on an end portion of the arc tube to form a close interface between the two. The presintered end cap and adjacent arc tube are then heated to until the end cap is fully sintered onto the arc tube and the sapphire tube grows into the end cap. A monolithic seal is formed along the interface between the end cap and the arc tube as the sapphire tube grows into the polycrystalline alumina end cap. The yttrium oxide promotes increased growth between sapphire tube and the PCA end cap and is not detrimental to the metal halide chemistry, nor subject to erosion by the metal halide chemistry.

A ceramic envelope for high intensity discharge lamp comprises: a cylindrical barrel section 1 that forms an electric discharge light emitting space; annular closing sections 2, 2 that close both ends of the barrel section 1, respectively; and capillary sections 3, 3 that insert and fix an electric discharge electrode to be outwardly protruded so as to be opposed to each other from the substantial center of both of the closing sections. The envelope essentially consists of alumina, and is formed to have light transmission properties by adding MgO. Then, the thickness of the barrel section at the boundary between the barrel section 1 and the closing section 2 is formed to be increased in thickness by providing a tapered section 4a to the thickness in the vicinity of the center of an electric discharge light emitting space. In this way, there is provided a high emitting envelope for high intensity discharge lamp capable of extending the service life of the lamp even if the electric discharge space is cylindrical.

During pinch seal, consequently, a sufficient pinching pressure is applied to a electrode 26, such as a tungsten electrode up to a portion close to a tip portion thereof. Thus, it is possible to reduce the volume of an almost wedge-shaped slit 24a formed around the tungsten electrode 26 on an end in the axial direction of a discharge space 24, thereby decreasing the amount of a metal halide deposited on the slit 24a.
