摘要:
Duplex electrodes are constructed by placing intermittent deposits of positive and negative electrodes on opposite sides of a continuous, electrically conductive plastic carrier strip. The duplex electrodes are then assembled into multicell batteries. The assembly preferably occurs while the duplex electrodes are structurally and electrically connected by the continuous plastic carrier strip after which the carrier strip is subsequently cut between duplex electrodes to obtain structurally and electrically unconnected batteries. Alternatively, the carrier strip may be cut between duplex electrodes before those electrodes are assembled into multicell batteries.

A method for making an electrode bearing conductive material by preparing a solvent containing electronically conductive plastic strip and contacting it with a solvent containing electrode mix such that an intimate electronic contact is effected between the contacting surfaces of the plastic strip and the electrode mix.

IN LEAD-ACID ACCUMULATORS, A BI-POLAR ELECTRODE WHICH HAS A SUPPORT WALL OF INSULATING MATERIAL AND TWO CURRENT CONDUCTORS OF LARGE SURFACE AREAS ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE SUPPORT WALL. THE TWO CURRENT CONDUCTORS ARE CONNECTED ELECTRICALLY TOGETHER BY A LARGE NUMBER OF THROUGH CONNECTORS WHICH TEND TO KEEP THE CURRENT DENSITY THROUGHOUT THE CURRENT CONDUCTORS SUBSTANTIALLY UNIFORM. NEGATIVE ACTIVE MATERIAL IS ON ONE CURRENT CONDUCTOR AND POSITIVE ACTIVE MATERIAL IS ON THE OTHERE CURRENT CONDUCTOR. THE ELECTRODE IS SO CONSTRUCTED AS TO PREVENT LEAKAGE BETWEEN ELECTROLYTE IN CONTACT WITH THE NEGATIVE ACTIVE MATERIAL AND ELECTROLYTE IN CONTACT WITH THE POSITIVE ACTIVE MATERIAL.

An electric battery is disclosed comprising a plurality of cells arranged in series, each cell comprising an aqueous electrolyte of zinc bromide circulated through the cells during charging and discharging, a bipolar electrode having a zinc anode deposited on one side and a bromine cathode and active cathodic mass on the other side. The active cathodic mass contains an active cathodic substance which is substantially insoluble in water and which is capable of combining with cathodic bromine to form solid addition products. Additive substances are dissolved in the electrolyte to reduce the solubility of the active cathodic substance, to increase the conductivity and acidity of the electrolyte, and to encourage the zinc to deposit in a thin and uniform layer.

The invention is a new composite battery plate for lead acid batteries. The preferred embodiment is a bipolar plate characterized by a plastic substrate as the support for the active positive and negative masses with lead strips on each substrate providing electrical conduction through the substrate. The battery plate makes possible a battery capable of supplying high rate power pulses and of accepting high rate charge pulses, both of short duration, and having a superior cycle life and improved energy density at high power density operating conditions.

Duplex electrodes are constructed by placing intermittent deposits of positive and negative electrodes on opposite sides of a continuous metal carrier strip having two nonreactive metal sides. In another embodiment, duplex electrodes are constructed by placing intermittent deposits of positive electrodes on the only nonreactive side of the bimetal carrier strip, with the reactive side of the bimetal strip functioning as the negative electrode in the duplex electrode. The duplex electrodes are assembled into multicell batteries. The assembly preferably occurs while the duplex electrodes are structurally and electrically connected by the continuous metal carrier strip; the carrier strip is then subsequently cut between duplex electrodes to obtain structurally and electrically unconnected batteries. Alternatively, the carrier strip may be cut between duplex electrodes before those electrodes are assembled into multicell batteries. The metal carrier strip may comprise: (1) a unimetal which is nonreactive to the positive and negative electrodes and to the electrolyte within the battery; (2) a bimetal in which the metal adjacent the positive electrode is nonreactive with respect to that electrode and the metal adjacent the negative electrode is nonreactive with respect to that electrode; (3) a trimetal whose outer two layers are nonreactive as in (2); and, (4) a bimetal or trimetal in which the metal adjacent the positive electrode is nonreactive with respect to that electrode and in which the other metal functions as the negative electrode in the battery. The particular metals employed will depend upon the electrochemical system used in the battery.
