摘要:
A method for preparing lead-acid battery positive and negative plates for use in lead-acid batteries, comprising (a) providing battery grids, (b) applying wet leady oxide paste to the grids to form plates, (c) optionally wrapping the freshly pasted plates with an absorbent material, and (d) initiating formation of the lead-acid battery plates while the plates contain more than about 5 wt. % free lead in the paste and are generally damp from moisture existing in the paste from the time of plate pasting. Although conventional curing and drying of the plates is obviated and the plate formation is initiated merely hours after plate pasting, instead of a day or more after plate pasting as is the case with conventional battery plate processing, the cells and batteries containing plates prepared in accordance with the present invention exhibit a mechanical strength and deliver an overall electrical performance equivalent or superior to cells and batteries containing conventionally prepared plates.

A reaction vessel in the form of a box is sized to closely contain electrode elements or core cell elements of a lithium-based or sodium-based battery or capacitor for contacting of the electrode material, placed in the reaction vessel, with a flowing gaseous stream of an inert carrier gas and vapor of an organic solvent of water for removing residual water from the porous electrode material elements which are to be infiltrated with a non-aqueous electrolyte solution. Complementary equipment is provided for delivering the gaseous stream to the reaction vessel with predetermined portions of carrier gas and organic vapor at a predetermined temperature, pressure, and flow rate.

A method of manufacturing a lead-acid storage battery, capable of being stored after completing the battery processing and thereafter activated by the addition of electrolyte, includes forming the battery elements and treating the battery elements such that sufficient acid, in one form or another, will be retained in the elements to provide a battery operating electrolyte with a specific gravity in the range of from about 1.260 to 1.290, preferably about 1.265, upon activation with standard activation electrolyte, and charging if necessary. Completion of the processing involves draining the battery, reducing the amount of retained acid to a specified amount below the amount the battery elements are capable of retaining when saturated and suitably sealing.
