A dual input battery assisted power converter (10) which provides a continuous, regulated DC voltage output to a user-connected mobile device, such as, a lap top computer or a cell phone, for example. The power converter (10) comprises a power supply circuit (12) and a separate, detachable power storage circuit comprising a battery pack (14) having a re-chargeable battery (36). The power supply (12) is adapted to deliver a pair of regulated DC output voltages, of opposite voltage potentials, to a pair of respective output terminals. Preferably these output voltages are derived from two external input voltages: an AC input voltage and a DC input voltage. Advantageously, if both of the external input voltages are temporarily removed, the battery pack (14) will advantageously serve as a substitute DC input power source, thereby allowing the power supply (12) to deliver the same regulated DC output voltage to the user-connected mobile device without interruption. Moreover, once either of the external input voltages are again re-established, the battery pack (14) automatically taps the output terminal of the power supply (12) at a node to recharge the battery pack (14).

A power transfer apparatus includes a first switch operative to couple and decouple a first AC power source to and from an AC power bus responsive to a first control signal and a second switch operative to couple and decouple a second AC power source to and from the AC power bus responsive to a second control signal. A first switch control circuit generates the first control signal responsive to a first AC source voltage produced by the first AC power source and to a first inhibit signal and generates a second inhibit signal responsive to a state of the first switch. A second switch control circuit generates the second control signal responsive to a second AC source voltage produced by the second AC power source and to the second inhibit signal and generates the first inhibit signal responsive to a state of the second switch. In some embodiments, the first control signal may comprise a current in a coil of a relay that couples and decouples the first AC power source to and from the AC power bus responsive to the coil current. A relay driver circuit may control the coil current responsive to the enable signal and the first inhibit signal. A current detector circuit may generate the second inhibit signal responsive to the coil current. Related uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and methods are also discussed.

A self-regulated system and method for cooling switching power supplies that take parasitic effects of switching which would normally be dissipated as heat in a typical RC snubber circuit, and use that waste energy to power a cooling element to automatically cool semiconductor switches of the power supplies and any DC or AC systems. The cooling element can be a variable speed fan, a liquid pump, a Peltier device, or the like, in which case the system and method provide power to the cooling element in proportion to the amount of current delivered to the power supply, and so the cooling system automatically adjusts itself to the level needed to protect the power supply.

In one embodiment, the mode selection circuit may function in two modes of operation. In a first mode, based upon an input voltage, the mode selection circuit is adapted to couple the first and second capacitors and the first and second switches together as a half-bridge converter. In a second mode, based upon the input voltage, the mode selection circuit is adapted to couple the first switch and the first capacitor together as a forward-flyback converter and to further couple the second capacitor and the second switch as a clamp thereto. In another embodiment, the first mode is a high voltage mode, in response to a high input voltage and the second mode is a low voltage mode, in response to a low input voltage.
