A high-power switch network includes a laser fiber optically coupled to a network including light-initiated glow discharge switches in a Marx configuration. A low pressure gas source is used to replenish gas within the switches lost due to ionization. Each switch has a cylindrical insulating envelope with conductive end caps at each end. The end caps are electrically coupled, respectively, to a cup-shaped anode and a cup-shaped cathode. Apertures are formed centrally in closely spaced plates of the respective cup-shaped electrodes. Optical fiber cables extend through vacuum sealed ports of the switches so that the unfocused laser light is directed about the aperture of the cathode so as to close the switch, thus providing a high power output from the network.

A high-power reversing-counterpulse repetitive-pulse inductive storage and transfer circuit includes an opening switch, a main energy storage coil, a counterpulse capacitor and a small inductor. After counterpulsing the opening switch off, the counterpulse capacitor is recharged by the main energy storage coil before the load pulse is initiated. This gives the counterpulse capacitor sufficient energy for the next counterpulse operation, although the polarity of the capacitor's voltage must be reversed before that can occur. By using a current-zero switch as the counterpulse start switch, the capacitor is disconnected from the circuit (with a full charge) when the load pulse is initiated, preventing the capacitor from depleting its energy store by discharging through the load. After the load pulse is terminated by reclosing the main opening switch, the polarity of the counterpulse capacitor voltage is reversed by discharging the capacitor through a small inductor and interrupting the discharge current oscillation at zero current and peak reversed voltage. The circuit enables high-power, high-repetition-rate operation with reusable switches and features total control (pulse-to-pulse) over output pulse initiation, duration, repetition rate, and, to some extent, risetime.

Alternate polarity pulses of current are fed to a load L1A by charging a capacitor C5A alternately in different directions and closing unidirectional switches V2A and V3A at appropriate times to discharge the capacitor C5A through the inductor L1A. This arrangement is considered superior to an alternative system in which different capacitors are charged with different polarities to produce the different pulses. In the latter system the arrangement of switches needs to be such that the closing of one produces transient voltages which might cause the other switch to operate when it is not required to do so. In the illustrated system the switches V2A and V3A, being connected in parallel, do not suffer from this problem. In an alternative system the switches V2A and V3A could be replaced by a single bi-directional switch.

An electrical excitation circuit is disclosed for a gas laser. The electrical excitation circuit includes a charging circuit connected in series with a pulse forming network between a power source and the laser load. The charging circuit includes a capacitor charged by the power source and a thyratron for transferring voltage to the pulse forming network. Alternatively, the charging circuit includes a capacitor charged upon the firing of a silicon controlled rectifier through a saturable step-up transformer which saturates for transferring voltage to the pulse forming network. The pulse forming network includes a saturable inductor switch positioned with respect to a capacitor so that when the voltage on the capacitor reaches a predetermined level, saturation of the saturable inductor switch releases electrical energy stored in the capacitor to the laser load.
