The present invention relates to a mobile communication system supporting communication of data which comprises a base station communicating with a switching arrangement. A communication protocol is used for communication between a mobile station and the switching arrangement. The connection between the base station and the switching arrangement supports packet switched communication and detecting means are provided in the base station to detect if data frames sent from the mobile station are correctly received over the air interface. Means are also provided for sending only data frames detected as correctly received onto the switching arrangement using the packet switched connection between the base station and the switching arrangement.

An improved technique for reducing unnecessary routing area updates ensures that the location of a mobile terminal is known when the mobile terminal starts data communication after being in a standby state. If no packet transmission is taking place when a mobile terminal moves between the first and second wireless access systems in a common routing area of a packet radio access network, no routing area update takes place. If packet transmission is initiated, no routing area update may be required if the mobile is connected to the same wireless access system as in its previous packet transmission. If packet transmission is initiated, a routing area update may take place if the mobile is connected to a different wireless access system than in the previous packet transmission. If packet transmission is initiated by the mobile, the packet transmission initiation may include the routing area update.

A method operates a mobile communication terminal or MCT (10) by the steps of: (A) determining, at the MCT 10, a location of the MCT in accordance with Global Positioning System (GPS) inputs, (B) transmitting a signal that indicates the GPS-determined location, the signal being transmitted from the MCT to a network service provider or NSP (30), and (C) downloading data to the MCT 10 from the network service provider 34 or from a server (40, 42) that is coupled to the network service provider through a data communications network (38). The downloaded data is selected in accordance with the GPS-determined location of the MCT. The step of determining may employ a GPS capability of the MCT or a GPS capability of a GPS accessory (28) that is coupled to the MCT. In one embodiment the downloaded data is comprised of map data, while in another embodiment the downloaded data is comprised of at least one of operating software or an operating protocol. The data may be downloaded as a background task. The step of transmitting may occur periodically, or in response to a user input, or in response to a request from the network service provider.

A low earth orbit gateway having a terminal is used to communicate with the low earth orbit communications satellites using multiple access communication channels, and is used to communicate with a public switch telephone network. A geosynchronous gateway having a terminal is used to communicate with the geosynchronous communications satellite by overlaying multiple access communication channels onto fixed channel assignments and transmitting the overlayed channel assignments. The terminal in the geosynchronous gateway is also used to communicate with the public switch telephone network. A fixed terminal having a handset is used to selectively communicate with the low earth orbit communications satellite using the multiple access communication channels, and with the geosynchronous communications satellite by extracting the multiple access communication channels from the fixed channel assignments.

A method and system which enables two-way mobile communication devices to automatically update and utilize the entries in a resident address book, where the entries are comprised of a personalized greeting from a caller and related information (e.g. automatic number identification (ANI) information). Calls placed to a serviced device are intercepted and processed by a call manager. The call manager extracts the ANI information from the call and determines if the called mobile device has an address book entry for the caller. If it is determined that the caller does not have an address book entry, the caller is prompted to provide a personalized greeting, which is recorded and forwarded with the ANI information to a proxy server device associated with the called mobile device. Upon completion of the above described processing, the called and calling devices are connected (i.e. a voice communication channel is established). The proxy server device processes the received personalized greeting and associated information and forwards it to the destination mobile device through a data communications channel. If it is determined that there is a pre-existing address book entry, then the called and calling devices are connected without further processing.

An improved channel structure for use in communication systems is disclosed. The channel structure utilizes two sets of physical channels, one for the forward link and another for the reverse link. The physical channels include data channels and control channels, and the data channels are further divided into fundamental channels and supplemental channels. Fundamental channels are used to transmit voice traffic, data traffic, high speed data, and other overhead information, and supplemental channels are used to transmit high speed data. The fundamental channels may be released when the remote stations are idle to more fully utilized the available capacity. The control channels are used to transmit paging and control messages and scheduling information. A method and apparatus for rapidly assigning traffic channels to a plurality of mobile stations in a wide area high-speed packet data cellular communication system. Mobile stations transmit access probes on randomly selected access channels to selected base stations to initiate traffic channel assignments. The access probe comprises a pilot preamble, a traffic channel request, and a pilot/data request channel (DRC). The pilot preamble allows the selected base station to easily detect the access probe transmission. The traffic channel request includes data that identifies the mobile station. Immediately after transmitting the traffic channel request, the mobile station begins communicating with the base station on both the forward and reverse communication links. The selected base station immediately supervises the mobile station's transmission power. The mobile station selects from a group of available power control sub-channels. The mobile station selects an available channel and an associated power control sub-channel from the list. In another alternative embodiment, the base station, and not the mobile station, initiates the traffic channel assignment process. A base station controller instructs all base stations within the mobile station's paging radius to transmit a page message on the forward link. The mobile station continuously monitors the forward link and responds to pages addressed to its associated MSI. When a page to the mobile station is detected, the mobile station initiates a traffic channel request. In addition, the mobile station immediately monitors the power control sub-channel that it identified in the detected page message.

The primary and secondary pilot channels (88 and 120) are included in the neighbor list (56) for the sector (26) as candidate handoff channels (98). The candidate handoff channels (98) are arranged in a ranked order in the neighbor list (56) such that those candidate handoff channels (98) having a higher rank have a greater likelihood for inclusion in a neighbor set of a mobile station (32) residing in the serving area of the sector (26).

A method and apparatus for implementing coordination of radio equipment. The apparatus may be used with any apparatus that is to be rendered inactive outside of a predetermined geographic area. The apparatus is equipped with a receiver for receiving a radio signal on a beacon frequency and for generating an enabling signal indicative of the presence of the radio signal. In the absence of the enabling signal, the apparatus is prevented from operating. The present invention is particularly well suited for providing coordinatible radio transmitters. The beacon signal is sent from an antenna in the geographic area in which the apparatus is permitted to transmit. The beacon signal includes a code which must match a code stored in the apparatus. In one embodiment of the present invention, the beacon signal also includes an authentication signature to prevent fraudulent beacons from improperly enabling equipment.
