    摘要: An improved technique for reducing unnecessary routing area updates ensures that the location of a mobile terminal is known when the mobile terminal starts data communication after being in a standby state. If no packet transmission is taking place when a mobile terminal moves between the first and second wireless access systems in a common routing area of a packet radio access network, no routing area update takes place. If packet transmission is initiated, no routing area update may be required if the mobile is connected to the same wireless access system as in its previous packet transmission. If packet transmission is initiated, a routing area update may take place if the mobile is connected to a different wireless access system than in the previous packet transmission. If packet transmission is initiated by the mobile, the packet transmission initiation may include the routing area update.

A fixed terminal having a handset is used to selectively communicate with the low earth orbit communications satellite using the multiple access communication channels, and with the geosynchronous communications satellite by extracting the multiple access communication channels from the fixed channel assignments.

    摘要: A method and system which enables two-way mobile communication devices to automatically update and utilize the entries in a resident address book, where the entries are comprised of a personalized greeting from a caller and related information (e.g. automatic number identification (ANI) information). Calls placed to a serviced device are intercepted and processed by a call manager. The call manager extracts the ANI information from the call and determines if the called mobile device has an address book entry for the caller. If it is determined that the caller does not have an address book entry, the caller is prompted to provide a personalized greeting, which is recorded and forwarded with the ANI information to a proxy server device associated with the called mobile device. Upon completion of the above described processing, the called and calling devices are connected (i.e. a voice communication channel is established). The proxy server device processes the received personalized greeting and associated information and forwards it to the destination mobile device through a data communications channel. If it is determined that there is a pre-existing address book entry, then the called and calling devices are connected without further processing.

The channel structure utilizes two sets of physical channels, one for the forward link and another for the reverse link. The physical channels include data channels and control channels, and the data channels are further divided into fundamental channels and supplemental channels. Fundamental channels are used to transmit voice traffic, data traffic, high speed data, and other overhead information, and supplemental channels are used to transmit high speed data. The fundamental channels may be released when the remote stations are idle to more fully utilized the available capacity. The control channels are used to transmit paging and control messages and scheduling information.     摘要: A method and apparatus for rapidly assigning traffic channels to a plurality of mobile stations in a wide area high-speed packet data cellular communication system. Mobile stations transmit access probes on randomly selected access channels to selected base stations to initiate traffic channel assignments. The access probe comprises a pilot preamble, a traffic channel request, and a pilot/data request channel (DRC). The pilot preamble allows the selected base station to easily detect the access probe transmission. The traffic channel request includes data that identifies the mobile station. Immediately after transmitting the traffic channel request, the mobile station begins communicating with the base station on both the forward and reverse communication links. The selected base station immediately supervises the mobile station's transmission power. The mobile station selects from a group of available power control sub-channels. The mobile station selects an available channel and an associated power control sub-channel from the list. In another alternative embodiment, the base station, and not the mobile station, initiates the traffic channel assignment process. A base station controller instructs all base stations within the mobile station's paging radius to transmit a page message on the forward link. The mobile station continuously monitors the forward link and responds to pages addressed to its associated MSI. When a page to the mobile station is detected, the mobile station initiates a traffic channel request. In addition, the mobile station immediately monitors the power control sub-channel that it identified in the detected page message.

The apparatus may be used with any apparatus that is to be rendered inactive outside of a predetermined geographic area. The beacon signal is sent from an antenna in the geographic area in which the apparatus is permitted to transmit. The beacon signal includes a code which must match a code stored in the apparatus. In one embodiment of the present invention, the beacon signal also includes an authentication signature to prevent fraudulent beacons from improperly enabling equipment.
