An improved ink ribbon cassette for a serial printing apparatus comprises a body, first and second substantially coextensive spaced ink ribbon guide arms projecting from the body, each having a free end, and an ink ribbon mounted in the body for advancement during printing and having a portion extending between the free ends of the guide arms so as to be available for printing. One of the guide arms has a window therein through which the ribbon is visible. A first optically detectable indicator is carried on the ribbon at a position to be visible through the window when the ribbon is substantially exhausted. A second optically detectable structure is mounted on the guide arm adjacent the window and laterally spaced therefrom in the direction of movement of the ribbon. This second optically detectable structure indicates the type of ribbon in the cassette.

A printing apparatus having two character generators, one which generates characters common to a plurality of countries, comprises a keyboard for entering character codes, a first character generator for producing certain character patterns representing certain character codes common to a plurality of countries, and a second character generator for producing other character patterns representing other character codes. A buffer stores the character codes entered by a keyboard and a selection signal generator generates a selection signal in dependence on each character code stored in the buffer. The selection signal indicates that the second character generator is to be utilized to produce the other character patterns represented by the other character codes. A processor controls the operation sequence ofthe apparatus. The buffer is responsive in the absence of generation of the selection signal by the generator to access the first character generator to produce one of the certain character patterns and the processor is responsive to generation of a selection signal by the generator to access the second character generator to produce one of the other character patterns.

An impact printer utilizes a single print hammer which is loaded with a selected type chip transferred from a rotatable carousel cartridge containing plural type chips. A single solenoid motor is energized to effect chip transfer, the loading of a spring to effect subsequent return of the chip to the cartridge, and the loading of an energy storage spring utilized to power the print hammer toward a platen. Completion of the chip transfer to the print hammer releases the print hammer to be powered by the storage spring until the solenoid motor is de-energized. The solenoid armature provides a reaction force to the storage spring only during solenoid energization. The duration of solenoid energization thus controls the impact force of the print hammer and is varied in accordance with the character area of the selected type chip and with the desired print density. An interlock latch prevents return motion of the type chip positioning and transfer mechanism during printing and during return motion of the print hammer. A restraining latch restrains the print hammer in its chip receiving position until the chip transfer to the print hammer is completed. The latching member of this latch is resiliently urged to restore the type chip to the cartridge upon return of the print hammer to its chip receiving position. An additional mechanism insures clearance of the latch member from the cartridge upon return of the type chip thereto.
