A plurality of solenoids are also provided which have operation bars attached thereto and which are respectively rotated by the solenoids. A plurality of engagement levers are also provided each of which includes a roller mounted at a rear end thereof for engagement with the inclined surface of the L-shaped operating levers and includes a pressure member for engaging the stopper. A coil spring is also utilized for biasing the engagement mechanism upwardly so as to connect the engagement mechanism and the moving block upon advancement of the moving block.

A drive mechanism for connecting a drive shaft of a sewing machine to a plurality of reciprocatable needle bars which are advantageously mounted in a single guide frame for reciprocation in the machine includes a link connection for each bar. The link connection includes an oscillatable two armed lever for each bar. It has an input arm driven by a shaft mounted in the machine for oscillation about a fixed axis and an output arm connected to a first link of a cooperative pivotally interconnected first and second link pair. An actuator shaft for each bar carries a respective actuator crank which in turn is connected through a link of relatively short length to the upper ends of the needle bars by a pivotal connection. The guide link is connected to the cooperative link pairs at their pivotal interconnection to each other and it may be moved by a setting mechanism which is either hydraulically or electrically actuated and is effective to change the reciprocation of each needle bar separately or together and without disconnecting the operating mechanism driving the needle bars.

An embroidering machine comprises a plurality of embroidering head each equipped with a plurality of needles formed into a group each with its thread. A needle bar is engageable with one needle at a time in the group to bring the needle from a rest position thereof into an operating position. A presser foot mechanism with a presser foot attached cyclically moves the presser foot upwardly and downwardly from an upper dead center position to a lower dead center position. The presser foot is provided with a hole for the passage of the one needle. Thread cutting and holding devices are provided for cutting the thread of the one needle to form a thread end portion and hold the thread end portion. Upon the termination of an embroidering operation with the one needle, the presser foot mechanism is operable to move the presser foot substantially transversely to a longitudinal axis of the needles and, after the thread is cut, to lift the presser foot upwardly beyond its upper dead center position. The holding device includes a shield for shielding the points of the needles in a rest position and a chamber having an open bottom and top end with compressed air nozzle for directing the thread end portions into the chamber to secure the thread end portions.

A sewing machine with stitch forming instrumentalities having an electromagnetically influenced actuator for controlling the pattern of stitches includes a skip stitch mechanism effective to suspend needle reciprocation for one stitch forming cycle whenever a pattern selection is made. The first stitch that will be formed after each pattern selection, therefore, will be a stitch placed according to the newly selected pattern and not a stitch placed according to the surviving data being processed in accordance with the pattern which is being replaced. Also disclosed is an arrangement by which the skip stitch mechanism is operated to suspend the needle reciprocation only when the pattern selection is made during an interval in which data from the pattern which is being replaced is being processed.
